Help with old Escort

Hi.
i have a 1995 ford escort Lx 4 door i just bought at an auction. Its got a few problems. My friend just changed the oil, oil filter, and spark plugs. The cars engine works but it shakes alot. The car changes gears very wierdly and causes jerks when it does change gears. And at random times the exhaust lets out crazy smoke. Let me know if i can get this fixed. Thanks

Re: Help with old Escort

sounds like youve got a blown head gasket to me... what color is the smoke? if its white then its a blown head gasket... if its blueish then its burning oil. im not sure if yours is a computer controlled tranny or if its still a vacuum solenoid... if it still runs off vacuum then just changing the head gasket will probably fix both problems. if its a computer controlled tranny then you probably need an electric shift solenoid too.

Re: Help with old Escort

It could be a whole bunch of things that can cause ford explorer / escort, engine to shake abnormally..Here's few possibilities: vacuum leak; EGR valve stuck open; fouled spark plug; cracked distributer cap; broken rotor; blown head gasket..Goodluck with the diagnosis..
