My 06 Freestyle needs a new ignition switch. I've done all the troubleshooting I can up to this point. About a month ago, it decided not to start. No sounds. No lights. Everything electric worked fine, so I was getting battery power. I just wasn't engaging the starter. Left it to sit overnight and tried the next morning. Started right up. Cleaned out the ignition and checked the starter connection. No issue. A few days later it happened again. We used the pins on the starter to bypass the ignition switch and Tada! instant start. It's only happened those times and no problems since, but I want to get this done before it goes back to not starting. I can get the switch without a problem, but how do I get the lower dash and column cover off for access and is this going to cause any issues with the key?

There's a ring around the cylinder that senses the key not the ignition switch. Maybe the key isn't sending the info. Does the security light flas?

It's not the key. Yesterday, I turned off the car and took the key out, but it still thought the key was in the ignition. I tapped it and it corrected. A mechanic friend said that it was the switch when I told him what it was doing. I already suspected, but he confirmed my suspicions.
