400 to 460

Is it a reasonable and prudent idea to swap a 460 for my current 400 under the hood of my '74 LTD 2 door? How extensive/expensive of an undertaking is something like that?

Re: 400 to 460

It's not a horrible task. I swapped a 460 into my 78 bronco from 400 to a 460. Trans is a direct bolt up,make sure you have the correct flywheel. Hardest part might be motor mounts. Not sure what other cars that style may have used 460 to source motor mount parts. Wiring should all work, hoses shouldn't be bad to find. Other than that exhaust will need redone. Weight difference is minimal and I don't think it will create any issues especially if you get rid of all cast iron 400 and add some lighter parts to the 460. I my 460 came in lighter than the 400 when done. Some say you need a different torque converter due to stall speed difference but my stock one works just fine.
