I'm trying to identify the transmission in my LTD. The manual is leading me to believe that it's an FMX, but other information suggests it would be the C-6. Is there a way to find out without needing to crawl under the car to look at the drain pan and whatever else?
Yes, I've seen that chart, but it shows three potential transmissions that match the motor. I have no idea where to find those part codes on the car. Although I suspect if there was a metal tag, based on the carb tag missing that would probably be missing, too.
Code X means it was originally and FMX. Of course as they came with both a C6 and FMX, there is always the chance that the FMX died sometime in the last 39 years and was replaced with a C6.
I'm the second owner, and the only modifications I've seen has been the radio and speakers. So there's a good chance it's still the original FMX trans. When it stops raining long enough for me to have dry ground to look, I'll see if I can find that tag.
Ok, so it was up on a lift today, investigating an exhaust leak, and it looks like it is indeed an FMX.
