I'm with Snap on this one, i would be looking at an engine-out scenario. You have to be sure that you don't have corrosion moving further down the body of the distributor to inside the block. Also, the distributors aren't meant to be tightened down too hard to the block, they're meant to sit firm on the rubber seal but be able to take a certain amount of vibration from the gear running on the cam.
Cheap insurance is at the expense of a few gaskets-pull it down, check it properly
