Will keep you updated.

As far as I know using a manual computer in an auto will possibly give stalling when decellerating but apart from that don't know.

The first thing I am going to do tommorrow is plug the ecu back in and see what happens. It can either work and ill be a happy chappy or it can see no transmission and go pear shaped. I don't think it will work as there is going to be no Shift Lever Position signal anyway so it may just send no signal to the EEC about being in reverse or not. If that happens we are going to do some trickery by working out the resistances of each transmission solenoid and fool the puter into thinking its in park It has to be done to each solenoid sa if theres one thats out it can throw other things out as well. It isnt as simple as using one resistor on the Shift Lever Position pin as the combination of solinoids being used have to match up with the gear position. Basically if the combination is wrong (if there were no resistors on each solinoid pin) then that will cause numerous fault codes and possibly send things into a spin.

Starting to get confusing but the guy who's helping me knows his stuff and has done it to a few race cars.

It didnt work just plugging the puter in as I knew it wouldnt. Worth a try anyway.

If you are after a manual ECU to suit your car or any other electronic part for your car give these guys a call. It will save you heaps of time tracking a manual ECU at the wreckers. It's bloody hard to find a ford 6 cylinder manual at the wreckers and a V8 is just about imposible. Here is the link to their web page and their phone numbers... They have distributors all over australia i think.

Re: V8 Auto -> Manual conversions and computer problems.

NZ,

Not sure what other inputs the trans gives to the ECU (but I guess you can find out since it sounds like you have the WS manual), but its not possible to simply plug in the Gear selector switch (it was a smallish box in the 97LE) back into the remaining auto loom, set it at the appropriate gear (1st I guess), and then secure it somewhere ?

Like ignition suggested, it might be easier to kludge some sensors / inputs back into onto the auto transmission loom, than fiddle with smartlock and other ECU's.

Just for interests sake, the EL manual computer plugged in and worked 1st go with on the EL - BUT I can no longer get the car into the idle self test mode Not sure if this is related, or something else thats freaked out since I last checked timing... (will experiment this arvo - weather permitting).

At least you've managed to nail down your problems to a specific cause though (unlike myself, who is still floundering around ). Let us know how it progresses...

If your talking about that EMF site . . then yes, it looks like the holy grail.
Basically all Falcon ECU's are $350 . . . AMAZING !

(sux to own a probe tho - at $1650 for a new ecu).

More FF members should know about this place (especially ppl doing manual conversions)... I got lucky getting a manual ecu, otherwise I would have been in the crapper

Re: V8 Auto -> Manual conversions and computer problems.

Ill have the appropriate values and instructions on how to set up the resistors tommorrow. My friend had them at his place but of course the computer wouldnt boot up for some reason. He's got it on his computer at ford so he'll send it to me tommorrow. If I can get away with using the auto puter itll cost a whole lot less.

The problem is fixed, cost $less than $3 and the result was amazing.
