Hi guys,

Got a 2002 mustang that has the engine seized and i bought the car which was sitting for a few years. I got an engine from a scarp yard and swapped the engine.
The car is a manual tranny and the engine i got was from a automatic tranny. So i installed a pilot bearing, reused the clutch and flywheel which were in good shape..the clutch was done a few months before he parked it due to engine issues.

So anyhow I have specific rpm vibrations, which are severe when i am in reverse. The vibrations are only at 900 to 1200 rpm where the clutch is released or not, in gear or not and in any gear. Also at that rpm range in neutral and not moving. I have ruled out tranny issues in this regard.
There is also a rattle or a knock sound that this rpm range. If needed i can take a video clip but i am not sure if the sounds will come out.

My background: I am a 2nd yr truck and coach apprentice so I am knowledgeable in the trade to some level.

I could really use help and so far I am thinking its the flywheel. Its not consistent with a misfire either. I have replaced the spark plugs with oem ford plugs a few days ago and made no difference.

Did you get the opportunity to hear it run prior to sale? Motor mounts, harmonic balancer, and flywheel are suspect. Also check vacuum hoses and MAF.

No i never heard the engine run at all. Motor mounts are good and tight, they don't have any play. Harmonic balancer has no wobble or play. I took the belt off and ran it to rule out the other pulleys and it still has the same vibrations.
One vac hose seems to collapse when engine is running but even when i take it off, it does not change anything.

Removal of the vacuum hose isn't going to help. Honestly, it's sounding like the flywheel, but it's cheaper and easier to replace the hose and clean the MAF prior to changing out the flywheel.

if i take the hose off, the engine shuts down. I doubt it being collapsed has anything to do with this.
I will get a maf cleaner and service that i guess. I believe its not a good idea to use brake clean on that sensor right?

If the hose is collapsing, you're going to have a lag in the signal which can cause issues. I switched to silicon hoses that collapsed and my truck ran like crap. Even if it isn't the cause, it's worth replacing. Always eliminate obvious issues when troubleshooting so that you're only diagnosing the real problem.
