Hey everyone,

Quick question I'm having some trouble figuring out. I'm experiencing some creaking noises when making slow turns in my 03 tbird and want to replace my power steering fluid. The owners manual specifies Mercon ATF, but as far as I can tell, that's been discontinued. However, the replacement product I thought was right--Mercon V--states that it's not a suitable replacement for Mercon ATF. Can anyone offer me any advice on what the right fluid is?

Thanks a lot!

Adding to what jwko said yes its backwards compatible, but also mercon is still produced under the name dex/merc. Its a lot cheaper than mercon v too.

I disagree w/what was said. The manufacturer of Mercon V knows best. It is not compatible, that is why the manufacturer said so.

But, tis possible that some of the new Dexrons are compatible.

Ford, the manufacturer of the automobile in question would know best. Here's Ford's official TSB concerning the switch to Mercon V in power steering systems.

85litcrownvic answered the question above about the dextron III / Mercon universal blend.
