2004 escape xlt automatic all wheel drive v6 Duramax
Starts and runs won't move
When I shift the shifter in the column it clicks into gear and shifter moves easily. Before this happened i drove it on the freeway a couple of miles and it started getting hot, the fans hadn't kicked in. I pulled over and unplugged the fans then plugged them back in and started it, drove it a couple of city miles in town, stopped at a light. It was getting warm again so I pulled over , turned on the heater until the fans came on and it cooled down. I turned it off and sat for a few minutes. Started it up, no problem. Put it in drive and it revef but didn't move. Tried all of the gears and got the same reaction.
What is the problem? I've been told 5 different things.

Fluid levels are the basic, if they're good, time to scan for codes.

Generally the neutral safety switch keeps it from starting, not shifting.
