My son purchased a 1955 Thunderbird and I'm helping to fix minor problems with it. The speedometer doesn't work. The cable is new
and spins when disconnected from the cluster in a counter clockwise direction with the car jacked up and in gear. The speedometer in the cluster spins in a clock wise direction with a small screwdriver and the needle operates normal. The transmission is a PMB 32-13495 which checks out to be for a 55 but seems to have a tail shaft from a 1957. Could this be the reason they don't spin the same? The angle drive is functioning as it should.

Can you see the drive gear in the tail piece? Could be stripped. Also, NPD lists a different slave gear for a manual transmission than an automatic, that might be your issue.

Maybe the cable is too short. If the cable spins running the car, the transmission setup should be okay. Have you tried holding the cable when it runs with the wheels up and running?
