In my opinion, the 5.8L 4 bbl was not a good combination that year. I had a lot of carb related problems like back fires and stumbles.
An eariler 2V carb model or later fuel injected
model is generally a more reliable driver. How does this one drive? And is it a light duty F250 or heavy duty F250? The light duty drove a little better than the heavy duty as I recall.

Theere's nothing wrong with a 4bbl 351W, if it's backfiring or stumbling, it's something wrong with the carb, not the engine. If it's a HD F250, it's the better of the two, it has a heavier suspension, and stronger axles. But, if you want the ultimate beater, get a F250 with a 300 I-6, they aren't high revvers, but they can't be killed and have loads of torque, and, they aren't too hard on fuel to boot.
