Having problems braking in my 2000 mercury sable. There is a hissing noise coming from inside whenever brake is depressed and car is hard to stop. I have tried depressing the brake with the engine off and then holding in down and turning engine on the brake doesn't go down on its on when engine is turned on after I do this. I am assuming it is my brake booster. Would this be a correct assumption?

Sounds like diaphragm inside is gone .When testing , with engine off , pump pedal a few times first before holding down to evacuate air before starting engine and then see if booster working .

It does sound like the booster is bad. Do as R.S.Logan said and the pedal should drop a little when the engine is started. If it doesn't, the booster is bad.
