Hi, all,
If you stand behind a Ford Escape, watching it drive away, you will notice things under the vehicle going to each wheel, which look like they could catch a big rock, defeating what little ground clearance the escape has. What do you call those things, what are they for, and why does Ford use them instead of alternative? Thanks.

Lower control arms. For AWD versions to allow clearance for ride height and CV axles would be my guess.

Unfortunately my days of teaching apprentices and others , motor engineering are gone . It would be impossible to educate members the intricacies of the car on any car forum . I would suggest you use Google for the answers to whatever you seek or attend any motor engineering courses available in your area to get the basic grounding on cars which may help you in getting answers to your questions and the knowledge of the names of parts and system set ups .
