429 identification?

44549 Views 21 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  SPARKER
hello all, hope someone can help me!
i am trying to identify what my motor came out of so i can order the right parts.everone i talk to at the auto parts stores say that they can't identify or get the right parts because it could be a "special" or a "thunderjet".
here's what i know so far
C9VE-B on the block and C9VE-A on the heads. it also has 9A16 stamped on it.
intake has C8SE-9425-B stamped on it

i really want to rebuild this motor, it will be turning the 44" swampers on my 81 Bronco!
thanks :beerbottl

You have a very early 1969 base model engine. If it is a 429, then it is as much a Thunder Jet (not Cobra Jet) as any other 4-barrel 429, and is factory rated at 360HP. Might be a 460, too, but the only way to tell the difference is by unbuttoning the pan...unless the tag is still on the intake manifold.

1969 429 and 460 longblocks are made of 100% identical interchangable componenetry except for the crankshaft and pistons (which are exclusive to each of the engines). Even the bore is the same on both engines.

thanks for the info! i do know its a 429 because i have the pan off and can see the markings on the crank.
Any recommendations of a good place to get parts?
Hi I have only just joined
I have just put a 429 in an XB coupe finding parts and getting answers was very
hard, but the best I found for parts and info was SOWKOS performance centre
in Adelaide .
thanks, but do they have a website? or maybe a phone number?
trying to get this thing together "RIGHT" if you know what i mean

I would type in Ford Racing in your search engine and go from there. The catalogue has plenty of parts and info and not everything is race specific.

I think he meant "marmalade". It's in Grandma's cupboard.
C9VE-B should be a 1970 429CJ engine block, C9VE-A should be a 1970-71 429CJ, SCJ and Police cylinderhead. Sounds like a nice engine!
I have this info from Tom Monroe's "How to rebuild Ford V8 engines" published by HPBooks, ISBN 0-89586-036-8. It's pretty old so I don't know if it's still published.

The alpha-numerical data in the book you are quoting is very incorrect and very inaccurate.
  • Contrary to your post, the casting number for a CJ & SCJ block is D0VE-A, not C9VE-B.
  • Contrary to your post, the casting number for a CJ & SCJ head is D0OE-R, not C9VE-A.
  • Contrary to your post, the most common casting number for a PI Head is D2OE-AB, not C9VE-B.

Ehm, oops?
In that case, forget what I wrote and let me just stick to what I know...
Have any books been published recently with correct info?

G'day, just caught your thread. I'm currently in the throws of installing a 460 into my XB coupe. Any pitfalls other than springs and shock towers that you are aware of? I heard a rumour last night that there are some rear end twist issues, but its the first I've heard of it.

Luv the coupes.
Lee.
Would C8VE-E heads be on a 1970 429 Torino Cobra Jet?
AND would the block have a casting# under the front of the heads with 064 casted?

Thanks!

What are these heads, a number is missing
You have tagged on to a 13 yr old post .Better to start a post of your own as those members are no longer on the forum for a reply .
It looks like a number is missing from the casting. I think it happens sometimes. I think it should be DOVE - C
Wonder how that happends?

Saw your tag, if you have facebook u might like a car I restored.

Cheers
Im not certain but I guess when they set up the casting they are able to interchange numbers according to the casting and I suppose a worker may simply forget one or put in an incorrect one sometimes. I will take a look at the link.
Thats a very nice car and nice resto you have done on that CJ. They are quite rare. The heads on that should be DOOE-R. Hopefully there are no casting mistakes on those heads.
