95 Escort Engine Replacement Question

Hi all;

I've got a 95 Escort Wagon LX 1.9L, for a little while i was having some ignition problems needing a new coil or distributor cap, I never really bothered with it, as it just started couiple days ago.

Last night on my way home from work, the problem worsened notably.

The ticking got incredibly loud, and then there was this horrible cracking noise, and we had a small fire under the engine that I managed to put out with bottled water I had in the car.

Well the car died, so I left it, long story short here, I got it home this morning, via tow truck, and taking a look at the engine, I've got about a 4 in circular hole, in what looks like my crankcase.

I'm assuming something blew out of my engine cauing the hole.

Ok well the nuts of my post is that I am going to have to replace the engine.

Anyone know what Escort years will go into a 95? The dealer told me they could get a used 95 engine for about 500 Canadian, don't know what they would charge to put it in.

My other option is to replace the engine myself. I do moderate car work, like brakes, plugs, engine flushes, transmission oil changes etc. I wouldn't mind trying the engine switch out if it is not way out to lunch difficult.

So anyone know what year engine will go into the car cleanly, other models i'll consider as well, like I know a contour svt engine will fit in it ( at least i've been told) but they are more money than i care to spend.

by the looks of it 91-95 should be the exact same thing, 96 is only different because it has an obd2 computer so sensors are different but i bet the basic engine will still work. 2 things of importance:1)dont get a used engine unless it has very low mileage, a remanufactured one is your best bet, more expensive than used but for that engine it shouldnt be bad at all. *every single escort 1.9 spins a rod bearing or chucks a rod through the block* and usually it happens around 120k miles.2) most front wheel drive car engines are removed from the bottom as in the whole subframe comes out with engine and tranny attached BUT i'm not sure about the escort, there may be enough room to get it away from the tranny and come out. a haynes or chiltons manual will tell you how its done, factory service manual is much better if you can find one. dont be put off if it has to come out from below, as long as the subframe bolts arent horribly rusted its actually pretty easy, just put the engine hoist on the front of the car,get it high enough to clear, block it under the main frame and roll the whole deal out from under the front end, tranny, struts, wheels and all.

As a matter of fact this car has approx 220K kilometers, so about 140K miles.
I guess i got a little extra out of it.

That is great information on the engine thanks. if i can get a 96 or newer engine, is it possible to replace the sensor wire kits, to upgrade it to odb2? Would it be just as easy as pulling all the wire kits out of the old car and replacing them with newer engine?

Also am i required to stick with a 1.9 L, or can I go with a ZX2 engine or gt engine? Would this require a tranny replacement as well?

Sorry for so many questions I just want to have all my options, the body is very good on this car so I wouldn't mind holding on to it.

96 is the last year for your body style, 97 up has a different engine etc and i have no idea about upgrading engines on escorts, usually after they blow up people dump them.
