Our receptionist has a '95 probe...i told her i would try to help out and get some info for her.

she has been told that she needs 2 head gaskets done....prices varied from $2500 - $3000 Aus. At this price it doesn't seem worth it to fix the car.

Does this price sound right and what labour is involved in a car like this??

would appricate any info, thanks

It certainly seems on the high side. Having said that, these are a twin cam, all alloy, multi-valve, V6 engine; with bugger all access.
Its always best to shop around for opinions & prices on Probes in OZ. Ford & Mazda dealers / specialists can do the work as the engine in the Probe is identical to those in V6 Telstars & Mazda 626 / MX6.
Does she have a particular problem or is this the 'diagnosis' from the mechanic. A well maintained motor is particularly reliable, despite its apparent complexity.

Thanks for all the info.

i was told that the engine just 'shut down' as it was way too hot while driving.
it was suffering from a rough idle and revs needed to be kept up to stop it from stalling while stationary. plenty of water was needed to refill but there no noticable leak.

head gasket was a local mechanics conclusion...although ultra tune said they can't be sure until they pull apart the engine as they can only hear a 'tapping' noise, which is not enough to go by.

You do not have to tear it down to determine Head Gasket failure.
1. Is there water in the oil?
2. Is there oil in the coolent?
3. Does the radiator bubble when engine is cold?
Remove radatior cap on COLD engine. Start engine look for bubbling out the radaitor.

These are the signs of blown head gasket. I had a Sunfire I KNOW. In addition overheating is the main cause of head gasket failure. If it got real hot the Mechanic is correct in suspecting the head gasket. He may have performed one or all above test.
