I am working on a friends car and it has a new alternator and battery but the battery light is dimly on, and it wont start. We charged the battery a bit while jumping it and it ran for a few minutes then died. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Heh... i know that, having same problem serval times in GT Escort from 1989. Check the Voltage regulator in Alternator. For me symptoms showing that it should die due overvoltage or overcurrent...

Regards

it sounds like a broken earth. did it run while the jump cables were connected?, if so, it was earthing through the other car's chassis, and when the cables were disconnected if it died, then likely the problem is indeed a broken earth cable
