2004 Ford Freestar. 293,XXX miles. Transmission oil pan magnet. We have a reman coming.

Questions:

1: Do I really need a lift to remove this bugger or can I do it if I get it jacked way up in the air with lots of colorful words?

2: What other things should I look at changing? My list right now is: rear main seal (what tools do I need?), umm.....

3: Anyone want to come over and help?

A lift would sure help. Can be done without it tho. Not many other parts actually needed to do the job. Exhaust y-pipe needs to come off. There is a gasket for it and the studs are usually a pain. A torch would help for those and for the subframe bolts that like to stick. With some careful torch work can heat the caged nut in the body for subframe bolts. Also a way to flush the cooler and lines is a great idea to prevent future failure.

Dang. I'm in Oregon. A bit too far.

Was the two hours with the right engine support, lift and proper lowering equipment?

Yes. I work at a ford dealer. And like I said I have done a lot of these. Everything had to go right for that time. Usually 3-4 hours start o finish.

Well, so far I have about an hour into designing an engine support. LOL! Tomorrow I'll start cutting and actually making it. My biggest concern there is making sure the engine doesn't flop around with just two attachment points. But I just now realized I can hook onto the back side with two points and the front side with one point, giving me three points of contact.

I am thinking of using a come-along hanging from my HF cherry picker to lower the trans. I could lower it onto the big drip pan and slide it out on that. I'll use the new trans to figure out how to balance it as best as possible.

Should be interesting to see. Or just disconnect engine and Trans, lower entire power train assembly and move Trans from there.

I have thought about that, but it would require getting the van up high enough to slide the engine out and a jack stable enough to support the whole thing. Or drop it with the cherry picker.

What would be the advantage? We don't have the time to do alot of other work on this since we need it back running ASAP. If we had the luxury of time, I could go over the engine and make sure it's leak free and clean.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think I'll just drop the trans.

And thank you so much for the time you have spent here and elsewhere helping. It seems that too often, factory techs stay away from the car forums so it's very much appreciated to get first hand knowledge.

Only real advantage is going to be easier lining it up. It is true would have to have a way to get van up high enough to slide whole assembly out. Not a problem helping. I don't mind giving advise when I can.

Well, it's all moot not. I found a shop that would do the trans R&R for a cheap enough price and fast enough that it's in our best interest to have them do it.

It's kind of a bummer because I wanted to see how tough it is. Also, I like a challenge.
