Adaptive Cruise and the brake

Hello,
I've recently purchased a 2019 Ford Edge Titanium which has the adaptive cruise option. I've noticed when a car pulls in front of me on the freeway and is far closer than the car-length setting of my adaptive cruise, my Edge will slow rather quickly in order to maintain the car-length distance. My question - is the Edge applying the brakes in order to slow my Edge down rather abruptly or is it using engine braking or something else? It seems if it is always braking whenever it is adjusting car-lengths that would be rather annoying if not dangerous for a vehicle following behind me. It feels as if it is actually applying the brakes but just thought I'd see if I could get a definitive answer.

THANK YOU
Doug
