This problem is driving me crazy not to mention costing me a small fortune for a new air filter lower housing two or three times a year. It only happens while the engine is cranking and just about to start but it only does it intermittently and therefore is very hard to track down a cause. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Backfiring on gas?? New lower air filter housing?? Wiiieeerrdd...:wtf:

Is the backfiring ocurring in the exhaust or the intake system?? Sounds like a bit of pre-ignition (timing). Or it could be a gas leak in the intake tract that is being ignited by the cranking of the motor??

I would take it to a gas specialist if I were you, like the places where the taxis get fixed.

I probably didn't explain it very well. The problem is that when it does backfire there is an enormouse explosion in the intake manifold that blows the rubber hose and the lower filter housing to pieces. Really annoying. I have replaced Spark plugs, leads,distributor cap, rotor,distributor bush and coil all without success.

Make sure your timing is set correctly too. One thing you can do to stop yourself buying air cleaner boxes all the time is to fit a one way valve in your intake duct or intead of using the clips for the air cleaner use springs.....

How much gas is getting pumped in with ignition on???? might be priming for too long....
