What do you think the best small car is under 20k but over 12k? Taking into consideration, ergonomic design, power, luxury, economy and value for money.

Please state why and if you have had past experience with that particular model.

Does a Focus fall into the under 20k category?

Since the Laser has been dead for 2 years and the Focus is its replacement, I would think it might. Focus CL RRP AU$20,660
Fiesta will fit in but not till April in OZ.

Just a note on the Focus - you still have to add dealer delivery chargers plus GST, plus any options you want, so I don't consider it a sub 20k car, coz you won't get one for that.

We just bought a 2001 KQ Laser with 60 thou on the clock for $13,999, with 3 months factory warranty left, then another 3 as part of the sale. It's a great car to drive, cheap to insure, one of the best cars we could have bought. Blueoval - you'd know this already, from my posts at fordlaser! LOL

And who voted for the Getz? You should be shot! ;)

Cheers...... Tim

My personal opinion of the focus is a little worse for wear. I havent heard all that many good write ups on the CL model.

Do you know much on say a 96 Telstar TX5 Ghia?

They are advertising the Focus for $18990 with air at the moment which is a pretty good deal & ad free insurance if you finance through Ford Credit

Another one who falls for advertising! That is still not on the road (it excludes dealer, delivery and GST), and you'd have to be desparate to go thru the interest rates that Ford Credit offer. You save more by finding yourself decent finance first (as far as the free insurance goes). I am not saying the Focus is bad, I bought one and love it, just beware the price ends up higher than advertising has you think.

Blueoval - the Laser was second hand, obviously, so it was on the road but you pay change over, which was about 500 bucks - give or take a hundred. I just had to hunt around Newcastle/Sydney/Wollongong for it, found it in Wollonong at a Toyota dealership.

Oops, missed the factory specs: The LXi Laser that I bought is a pretty basic car, just has central locking, air con, pwr steer, excellent sound system. Not as much power as the Focus (but it's a smaller engine), but the car is a happy FWD manual that is enjoyable to drive.

It's benefits over the Focus is the seating - you actually feel like you are sitting in it, as opposed to on it.

Hope that answers your questions. Tim!

Thanks Tim. I dont have anything against the Focus as such. Its just the comments I have seen on other threads may have swayed me to beleive that the Focus is an over priced, under powered flop. Correct me here as I havent driven one b4 and you have.

The Laser for that matter I know has a good reputation for being good value and good all round vehicle for a affordable price.

I wouldnt buy brand spanking new myself, its not worth the cash you lose in depreciation. Second car, about 2-5 yo would be my range personally.

We had one of these it was a great car fun to drive handle great although leg room was bad in the back, you would have to put foot in sideways if driver is tall, and this was when i was 14 with size 9 shoes woot. Other than that the only major bad thing was cost of repair if in a prang was roughly $6000 an end. A good example was strip light in spoiler $900.00.

Um where did i say that was drive away??? It is still alot cheaper then when they were 1st released & is competetive with other cars in this segment.

Please in future read what is actually written before you starting spouting rubbish.

You forgot the Hyundai Elantra at $18,990. Had a brand new one as a hire car over Christmas and I was very impressed. A base model with power windows front and rear, a great 6 speaker stereo with MP3 playback and a 2.0 engine that is more powerful then anything else in its class. Hyundai have come a long long way. I would just about put the Getz in 2nd place too.

A late model Laser will be the best bet. Wasn't a hard choice to make off the list. It's a great handler, has some decent poke and build quality is great.

IMO Honda Jazz craps all over in the list bar Corolla, which isn't that bad.....just a bit bland and boring as all Toyotas are.
