You know, that little dickie seat that sat between the front buckets
on XA to XC's, and some had seatbelts.
I'm wanting to register my XC ute as a three seater with buckets
and was wondering if these "seats" with belts are legal.
Thanks, Will.

I have been told you are allowed to carry people in the back of a ute because it's the only way certain outback communities can transport their inhabitants.

yes they are... if they are the factory fitted items ...
or parts procured from a car that had them factory fitted originally

as my XC sedan did

Any individual car is licensed to carry a certain amolunt of people. If you change that, you need to get an engineers certificate and a modification certificate from the Authorities.

Spoke with a lovely lady at VicRoads today, and after what
seemed like 10 minutes on hold, as she went to get advice,
she says -

as long as the parts were factory fitted in the same series,
bolted up to factory points, and no mods were made to body
or parts to allow for such fitment, I was OK for Reg and insurance.
Note, i'd have to go for column change also.

I explained that the car was a factory 3 seater (bench)
and I wanted to fit original "period / Series" parts.
She said a workshop manual might be handy, but most
branches had cluey inspectors and they would know
what looked to be 'Factory" fitted.

I'm confident it can legally be done....just where do I stick the B&M??

Thanks for the responses guys!

Will,
I think XFs came with a benchseat and manual. If not it was WBs. My ute in the end before I sold it had 4SP and dicky seat. It was very cosy with 3 people on a trip! I am sure that the VIC roads are not as cluey as they claim! It would have to be an old inspector.

I guess what i omitted.
Ford did offer a Split Fold bench in XF Commercials. Only requirement was that they were all column auto's.

...am actually looking for one to retro fit to my XL ute.

There's a guy on the "other" site selling off a few, might be worth a look!
I've got a near perfect XC ute bench with the fold down armrest in brown
vinyl, too good to recover as it's dead stock, just not the colour theme
that I'm after.

Will,
You could just modify yours a little to alow the movement of the shifter. I had no clearance problems with the dicky seat and my singlerail. I will e-mail you a picture to better explain.
