Hi guys, my first post....wanting to know a good Cam to go into a 302 Cleveland with extractors (gasp) quadrajet carb extractors apparently it has a mild cam already and a shift kitted C4. How do I know if it has a mild Cam considering it has 15 inches of vaccum at the manifold on idle? It is duel fuel. Car is not driven much, weekender only. Idle quality for new Cam not too much of a concern. It is in an XW. Cheers Bob

tell me your transmissions stall speed? diff ratio? what revs your will to take motor to maximum and if you are willing to change the valvesprings and ill suggest a couple of grinds that may be suitable.

thanx for the reply tyre toaster.it wil have a 2000 stall converter;a 3.0 diff; will rev to 5000-5500 and if need to change valve sprigs no problem.

ok for that rev range in a clevland u can go something in the 225/235 duration and 535/565 lift range this will give a basic rev range of 25000-5500 but will need bigger stall and diff gears to get it to work effectivley.


the cam i listed above is very similar to the viking h100 a very popular cleveland cam used since the days of the gt.

XBWGN has a reasonable cam in his 302 XB coupe. It ran up 155rwkw. Thats a close enough to 30 year old untouched till we opened it 302. All that was changed was exhaust dag's tidied,cam changed, edelbrock performer manifold and a Holley 650 double pumper. Not bad for an engine that still runs the stock manifolds.

Make sure the cam you select will suit a 302, if its designed for a 351 and used in a 302 it will be more radical as the cubes are less etc. If a cam that is designed for 351 has a slight rough idle like the one suggested, it will be a lot rougher in the 302.

Go to the Crow site and fill the questionaire out, you'll get a written reply with a suggested cam for your current combo.

The crow cams computer questionaire hasn't work for some time now. I've been trying for at least a year to use it. I am curious what cam it would spit out for my engine.

the 302 will not be as bad as u think i built 2 identical engines at the same time in january last year with the exception one being a 302 one being 351 using the cam listed above and the idle quality was identical the cams started to work at very simlar revs and peaked around the same, there is a diff but not much.

The Crow questionaire can be faxed/mailed in as well. You can phone Crow up and ask for one or find one in Parts Pedders mag, Autobarn also has them.

TyreToaster was the main differnece between those engines torque? Did you have them both dynoed? results would be interesting.

the engines where both chassis dynoed same gearbox/diff/gears/tyres the there was considerable diffrence in horespower and tourque and a side by side race showed big diffrence as well but idle quality was basically identical and both engines peaked at at almost 5500rpm.

it is true the 302 pulls for maybe 200 revs more in the top end but not enough to make a diffrence.

iff you wanna put a bigger cam im your car you will have to put on a square bore maniflod with a 600 vac to notice the improvement properly

not true the factory thermoquad will give a much bigger push in the back when it opens the secondarys, and the factory carb is considerably bigger than a 600 holley, what a squarebore holley will do is give you smoother transition when secondarys open so u wont get a big flat spot that the thermos can give at lower revs.

if you are buying a cam buy a modern one, the cam i suggested is similar in its working range and idle but has been revised since its introduction 30 years ago (thats a good thing) wouldnt recomend anyone fitting a product designed 30 years ago, especially one that has had so much imoprovements in recent times.
