How are these heads when it comes to porting , and what sort of gains are you guys seeing along with streetable cam setup changes or even without cam changes .
It seems over here we look at supercharging these things , but I can't imagine them holding on for too long without some bottom end work .
As soon as the warranty runs out on this thing , the motor is coming out for better rods , cams and headwork as N/A 450 horsepower ( at the wheels ) on these things seems very acheivable .

Cheers

Soon?!?!?! Start it now!!!
The XR6T has taken too much R&D time off other shops... not fair.
If we are to tackle the LS1, and soon to be LS2, boys we'll need lots of R&D!!)

Keep us informed with any developments please.
We are setting things up for R&D right now, exhaust systems,intakes,cam/heads etc.We have been working hard on the LS1 since 99 being the first into the 11 sec bracket with the LS1 & we recently ran the fastest stock internal LS1 on true street tyres in the country (12.9 @109mph-4150 pnds race weight).

Our aim now is to have the fastest Fords (5.4's) at the strip & we won't stop until it's done. Before the LS1 came onto the scene I owned an EB GLI 5 litre that ran 13.9 @ 106mph.I loved that car,it sounded so sweet right up to the 6200 rev limit & beleive me it hit that often.I used to enjoy seeing the look on the WRX boys faces as I gave them hell.Everyone bagged the Fords back then & I enjoyed showing them otherwise.Although we have been working hard on the LS1 our specialty is High tech modern V8 & that includes Ford.I am looking at purchasing a BA XR8 soon but if anyone is interested in using their car for our R&D program we would be very interested, the more cars we have out at the track the better, this person must also be keen to run out at the strip & enjoy having a play on the dyno.We have a BAGT at our disposal but I would like a dead stock BA XR8 manual,if any of you guys are keen the price will be irrisistable .Our aim is to build an angry bolt on package to run at the strip & then progress through to more extensive engine mods from that point onwards. We need to make some good numbers to overcome the BA's weight disadvantage.I know I am rambling on a bit but we are so fired up,we just wan't to hit & conquer the Ford scene ASAP.I have ben a Ford man since the age of twelve & it's still in my blood. At the end of the day if it goes fast I like it.

Wooooooooooooooooooooo I'm excited already.
The LS1s have had enough R&D attention already in the past 3 years... now its our turn.

Unfortunately I don't think I can nominate my car for the test car. It is a BA XR8 ute manual, but I depend on it 24/7 to get around. Can't have it sitting in a shop ( Soz. Buy one! its tax deductible!)

sounds good, do you think it would take about 3 months or more before you have something to sell on the market...

And a job well done on Ritchie's car (CLUBVX) to get the 12.9 in street trim it was too.

Now that the BA's have 3 performance cars (XR6T, XR8, GT) that are both popular and have loads of potential, it's good to see tuning guys bringing that potential out. The more at the strip the more interesting too. I could also see it improving brand image for Ford?

Imagine the potential though when someone finally cracks the code for the Boss 5.4...also the potential of their bank balance when they get a program for it and copyright it!

Being Glenn's offsider at G&D we are all excited about the upcoming Ford BA projects, from the day the BA came out we new that Ford had something special, something to rival GM's LS1. It took way over 1 year of aftermarket fiddeling to take the LS1 over the 200 rwkw mark, the Ford is allready there and its only just begining!! You will not find a more dedicated bunch of petrol heads, and be rest assured, the track times will do all the talking. let the equalisation commence.

The heads flow Approx 265/195 cfm stock. My ported versions are in the 320/230 range at .500 lift.

I can't answer the second question. The dohc 5.4 is not used in any production car in the US. I Have one of the only 5.4 dohc mustangs. As you would guess i have had to develop most of the parts on my own( At big expense!).
This means there is not alot of hard info on what a cam only swap or porting only will do for power gains. The 5.4's i build are complete builds(Raised compression, Ported heads, Bigger cams etc.)
The weak spots....Stock connecting rods, Oil pump gears, Pistons limit rpm to about 6200.

What octane fuel is available in AU ? I ask because These engines really respond to high compression ratios.

Hi Al, thx for your input and helping us understand more about the Boss 5.4..
The best octane we can purchase at what you a gas station is 98 ron...
In our service manual's Ford actually tell us we can use 91 ron but I never do I only use 98 ron...

Excuse my ignorance, but How is 12.9 fast when MOTOR mag ran a 13.24 in a stock HSV GTS? I would have thought the fastest stcok internal LS1 on street tyres would atleast be in the 11's?

A GTS makes 300 kw via ported cylinder heads and more aggresive camshaft, they also use 3.9 diff gears. The car in question uses only bolt ons and tuning, ie the rocker covers have never come off, it ran 12.90 @ 109 mph... think anyone else hear can say the same?

FYI, a car in similar tune ie only bolt ons, ran 12.6* @ 109 on slicks, pop in a mild camshaft and run flat 12's.

It all sounds so easy when you only read about it.

Al, did you encounter any dramas with the tuning of the engine after installing aftermarket cams? Did you have to crack the code for the ECU to reset the idle revs etc and allow the engine to respond well to the cam change?

Right, thanks for clearing that up. I guess I was unaware of the definition of a bolt on. I thought a bold on was any modification that "bolted on" that didn't change the engines aspiration.

So 12.9 for a car with 3.45 gears, and basically a tune, intake, exhaust? Just out of curiosity what Roller Rockers do LS1's use?

in actual fact ClubVX has 3.9 gears, but aside from that yeah, tune, exhaust and intake mods. If oil touches it, it aint a bolt on. The LS1 uses a roller fulcrum type rocker, it does not have a roller tip. We have dyno'ed GTS-300's on our dyno and on average they would make around 210-220 rwkw, ClubVX makes 240 rwkw as do many others. you gotta love it.

I'm local to you guys and the Silver Devil (BAXR8 Auto Ute) is begging for some fun. What you guys have to say has gotten me a little excited to say the least. Downside is I don't have time for the track and it's too valuable to me to be a full-on R&D rig, but I am interested in getting it on the dyno and being involved in some (light duty) way, even as an observer. I can offer you a tour of a key BOSS supplier if you're keen. Open to suggestions... :hehe:

PS: What's your nick on LS1?

How do we go in contacting you. email/phone?
Might be interested in using my car as a test dummy.
Would like to talk to you first, and see what is involved!
