I've read some letters in Drive in The Age over the past few months where writers say they've got benefits out of PULP by "tuning" their cars (various recent models) for it. Are there any current mainstream ECU controlled motors that can actually be "tuned" for different octane ratings and, if so, how? I thought anything with a crank angle sensor and/or no dizzy would prevent advancing the base timing. Apart from that there's nothing to fiddle with to "tune", but I'm still getting on top of 1988 technology so maybe later cars are different.

EA, there are aftermarket ECUs that are home-programmable. Wolf3D, SDS and MoTec are the first that come to my mind. For a minute, think what are the main differences between PULP and regular unleaded? The most striking one is the different optimim ignition timing. On EA-ED and EL Falcons they still have a distributor-in-block ignition system, so its easy enough to bump the timing 1 or 2 degrees. After that, its complicated a little. I believe that PULP requires a slightly different advance curve to perform at its best compared to ULP. And if youre using something slightly more viscous, such as Shell Optimax, then it will require a slightly richer mixture curve to compensate for the fuel's viscousity. All up, it is possible to tune for different mixtures.. You could get a hot chip programmed for you with your car on the dyno, but that could end up costing a fair bit..

On the issue of fuels such as Optimax, Syndergy 8000, and BP Ultimate, they are higher density fuels. Means more mass for the same volume.

So, consider fuel injectors which rely on pressure and regulate the fuel delivery by pulse length. When the fuel is injected it is burnt and the ECU sees a mixture reading at the O2 sensor, and also a MASS air flow into the engine. The result of using the denser fuel is that the fuel injector pulse length is now excessive (same VOLUME but more MASS) and so the fuel delivery will or should be trimmed down.

Remember - mass air flow engines calculate everything on mass, not volume. This was a major turning point in engine development and followed aircraft which have used mass measurement for a long time.

This theory is the justification of why Shell market Optimax as giving more distance from every tank.

Thanks all.

The impression I got from the letters in Drive was that the owners were saying their stock cars could be specifically tuned for PULP, rather than after market programmable chips or automatic adjustments in the system. Does this sound right? I'm interested because I'm wondering whether the writers were deluding themselves or whether their mechanics might be having them on.

I have bumped the timing on the Big Block Camira by 3 degrees and run premium most of the time. Same can be done on your EA. Reason for this timing advance for PULP is PULP is less volatile and burns slower. So you have to light it up sooner.

Zigactly!! I have done the same to the beast, it was pinging its tits off at 29deg, even on Sloptimax. So I rammed it up to 33/34deg and she's sailing smooth now. As Pete says, it's not so much "tuning" as in extra power etc, but more getting ignition right and proper.

I experimented with that, because there's no crank angle sensor and advancing the base setting remains constant throughout the range. Tried it with PULP and advanced 2 and 4 deg and no difference. Actually a bit worse on 0-100 times. Not sure if that's the definitive result as there's still an ECU / KAM problem coming up on my diagnostic codes and I'm not sure my engine management is 100%. Might try it again when I sort that out, which will be after I sort out a few other things.

I would have guessed pinging is worse at higher advance (33) than at lower (29). From my extensive experience!

Remember though that pinging is most prone at highest BMEP range which can usually be equated to highest torque rpm.

Anyone know what sort of mods you can get away with on the EEC-V. I was wondering how much they can adapt before throwing in the towel.

EA S, Can you tell me more about these diagnostic codes?

Don't know nuttin' about AU / EEC-V.

I can tell you how to do it on EA-B, although you'll need a manual of some sort to get the codes.

I use an EEC-Tuner to recalibrate my EECIV 351C ute.
I have some support for aussie EEC's too eg: EB-ED 5.0's,EA-ED 6's.
Most of the six cyl stuff has less support at this stage but it's coming.

For my ute I have calibrations for both BP Ultimate 98,std unleaded and lpg.
Obviously the main differences between them are in the spark maps. Lpg has peculiar spark requirements; I have lots of initial spark with a quick advance rate but about 8-10deg. less total advance.
I have upped the closed throttle spark adder for a smoother idle and increased the exhaust pulse delay time for the HEGO's which are mounted in the collectors of the long four into one headers.

There are about 5 other guy's using the EEC-Tuner around Perth;
Two ED XR8's...one a 347 the other a modded 5.0, 5spd EBXR8,'72 5.0 Capri,'33 Ford w/351W. Also coming soon;a powerdyne blown 5.0 XW ute, 460 alloy CJ headed XA sedan,an all alloy 598ci XG ute.

The EEC-Tuner is a basically a little piece of hardware consisting of some interface logic and RAM. It plugs into the J3 port(that little edge connector on the back edge of the EEC) and the unit itself folds back into the EEC case, it allows you to access and modify the original Ford code. One installed you attach the provided serial cable to your laptop and make the changes. Then you just cycle the ignition key and the changes will take effect.

The current price is $810.

You can get them from me.

Bearing in mind that my electronic knowledge is pretty much exhausted by turning on the TV, is the tuner effectively the same as a programmable chip, in the sense that it does the same stuff. In particular, can it be dynotuned?

As for dyno tuning I don't really understand the question but I'll guess you mean can the car be dyno'd? The answer; Yes of course, that is the way to tune properly and that is what I do.
You make changes and clutch it out whilst cycling the igniton key and off you go again.
If you find any driveability issues you just tune them out on the road.

The good thing about the EEC is that it runs so damn well to start with the changes required are minimal.

BTW I'm working on a MAF SEFI conversion for 6cyl cars. That way the benefits of the V8 EEC can be transfered to the six cyl. Replacing the Speed Density bank fired EEC.

That's what I meant by dynotune.

Interesting, especially the bit about tuning on the road.

Does it have a memory? I'm thinking of a mate of mine who runs dragsters for his kids and they've got these little discs that go into the engine and can be pulled out and put in a laptop and give the details of a run, virtually down to every time a plug fires if you want it, in graphs and god knows what else. It's a useful way of identifying problem areas, amongst other things. Not important, but nice if it's possible.

Don't understand the advantages of MAF/ SEFI over MAP etc for my 3.9mpi. Didn't even know it could be done. Is it essentially that it fires each cyl instead of injector banks and MAF gives better input for engine managent than MAP?

Yes the "memory" you refer to is known as datalogging. Yes at this stage there is Datalogging for some U.S. EEC's including the one I use (A3M1 which comes from a 5.0HO 'Stang).
What's good about this datalogging is that it is actually logging what the Microprocessor is "seeing" and calculating. This unlike other external loggers which cannot know what the EEC microprocessor is "thinking".

The advantages of MAF over SD are significant firstly engine load is calculated directly using actual airflow measured by the MAF sensor. SD is calculated using engine speed and air density(hence the term SD). Air density is calculated by Manifold Absolute pressure and Air Charge Temperature combined with known engine capacity. So if you modify an engine (eg; change the camshaft) you will throw the ECU into disarray with it's calculations. SEFI has obvious advantages of firing the injectors in the actual firing order rather than dumping fuel in groups of 3(in the case of the 3.9/4.0)
