Named it correctly ,It's called a boot / tailgate throughout Great Britain , Europe , Australia and the vast majority of the world and has been since Adam was a boy .
Listen at boot whilst someone operates and see if you can hear the boot lock actuator trying to open . You may need to pull boot trim , check for power and check lock assembly for possible water ingress or sticking which can often be cleared with WD40 or similar .
On some make of cars we had problems with the boot locks which was caused by the rear washer hoses leaking into boot on to lock
