I'm looking at a 4-spd 351 GXL and want to know how the car left the Factory.
I know little about the codes, and all I really know is that K and T refer to the 351 engines and L refers to the 4-spd (B being an auto and Y being a 302.)

Where can these codes be found and what order are they in etc?

Anyone know what colours were available from Ford and what colour the car should be based on codes?

The car also has a 9" rear - how could I tell if that was original?

I'm quite sure the car would've started life as a boring 6 cylinder auto or something, but who knows. Also any tricks like different panels etc. in a V8 car or stuff like that?

All the info will be on the ID plates attatched to the LHS of the firewall.

The body prefix should start with JG32 for a Fairmont GXL
The model should be 18638
Engine codes : T - 351
P - 302
J - 250 low compression
N - 250 high compression
E - 200

Trans codes : N - 3spd column manual
L - 4spd floor shift manual
R - column auto
B - T-bar auto

Don't have the paint code list here, but I could dig something up if you get stuck.
As far as I know, if it was a factory 351GXL it should have a 9 inch diff.

The codes are found on one of the compliance plates.There are sections which say Engine,Trans,Paint & Trim and there are letters/numbers stamped under each heading.
Check that the engine number matches the number stamped on the shock tower and the number stamped on the compliance plate.
If it is a factory 351 GXL it should have a 9 inch disc brake diff.
Ford Customer Service can probably tell you what the paint and trim codes mean.
V8 cars had a larger radiator opening and the radiator support panel had a double skin running over the top of the radiator which can be seen from the engine side.Tachos are also different.V8s had a small 8 printed at the bottom of the guage and 6 cylinders had a small 6.

Thanks heaps guys, very helpful stuff. The trim and exterior colour I'm less worried about as they can be changed, and a respray or re-trim couldn't devalue it because it's already been sprayed and the interior is far from perfect. When I do get the paint code and the trim code I might post them here, but I'll also try and call Ford customer service with them.

It's interesting that Stardust paint = code V as this is the code for Emerald Green on my '78 update.
Incedently it's also the code for Apollo blue on the XBs!
