I believe superchips can reprogram the original chip, but it costs $$$. Not sure of any outright replacement chips.

Spins? Front wheel frive cars are very hard to spin on launch. Either your not launhing correctly, or something somewhere is seized or broken. Check your swaybar and the bushings for starters, also your calipers for seizing (might be momentary or something).

Is this ATX or MTX?

pinky,

the superchips chip has been proven not to provide any probe user with any measurable benefit. it's more like a big waste of money.

as for the wheel spinning, what condition are your tires in? the only time i get my tires spinning is when the road is slick or i really dump the clutch (act).

Road & Track did an article on these chips (in general) several months ago. The consensus is that for any modern car they're a waste of money--not just the Probe. Off the top of my head, they tested a BMW 3-series, a 'Vette, a C/K-1500, a Ranger, I think a Viper, and a Lumina. Basically, a general cross-section of vehicles. They tried out all the major chip makers (Dinan, Superchips, etc.)

Not a single one produced any benefits at all. In fact, the Superchips in particular REDUCED hp & torque!!!

The only chip that made any difference was the tune-it-yourself one (I forget the manufacturer's name), and that was marginal & required scarifices in one place to get gains in another.

The upshot is, don't waste your money on chips, find another bolt-on.

Chips suck?

I dont know about that. I bought a chip (JETchip) a few years ago for my 90 PGL and have enjoyed the benefits. I noticed a definite difference from the upgrade. I live in Colorado about 8 months out of the year and my probe climbs the hills far better than it did before the chip. The other 4 months or so I live in So. Cal. and with the o2 rich air, my car runs like a champ. The speed limiter was upped to who know's what because the damn speedo only goes to 95(but I know top speed is more than 130mph!). And the torque is definitely there.
By the way, do you know what issue of Road & Track that report was in?

Sorry, no. I think it was late '00 or early this year. Might try running a search on their website.

I was amazed at their dyno plots, for the most part the peaks looked the same, except for the tuneable one.

I'll see if I can find something--I know I don't have the paper copy anymore (too many car magazine subscriptions & not enough room to store back issues...)

According to the conversation I had with a Thomas of Jetchips marketing and sales dealers, their chips are niether tunable or do they produce significant gains on vehicles that are already modified. The chips they market are mostly for people who have stock vehicles that want a little more power. The chip advances the timing and according to him would not produce anything worth talking about in a vehicle that has been modified prior to putting the chip in.

I think it's a fair conclusion to say that most people start here, feel a difference and continue to do upgrades.
