the car.... EF with pedders springs/shocks

the problem... the front suspension is getting creaky (the car has 180000kms, so...). specifically, when moving away from standstill or any large suspension movements at low speed (eg. pothole, speed bump), there's a very noticeable creaking. the problem was fixed (for a little while) by ford, they 'tightened' everything up, whatever that means... but it came back. it sounds like it could be coming from the top of the strut. interestingly... if the car's been at the mechanic's and been on the hoist with the wheels hanging.. the noise goes away for a day or so, but comes back again.

any ideas?

Firstly i own an EF of similar millege to you. Mines done 188,000km. With my Wagon it makes a creaky noise just like you said on ripple bumps. However mine is comming from the leaf springs on the back. I have the pedders sports rider on the front and i'm going to change my ones in the rear with the sports rider as well.
I think it's to do with the bush's, not the shock's it self. I suggest to make a quote for nolethene bush's instead of rubber.
BTW if you want really good advise go to a suspension specialist i don't recommend pedders they are abit dodgy, don't get me wrong parts are excellent but service and workmanship are dodgy. thats my experience.

Had same prob with my EL XR8......Cant remember which bushes were replaced.
They were at the front, problem is caused by the metal inner sleave coming away from the rubber.
Pedders fixed mine with nolethane bushes

still haven't got round to getting it fixed, but have recently been told it's probably rubbers in the camber kit (???) that need re-greasing?

The noise you guys are talking about is usually caused by the upper, inner, control arm bushes. Standard bushes will do this when they get a lot of K's up and some of the cheaper caster/camber kits will do the same, (even when they're still fairly new).
The best way to get rid of it permanently is to replace the upper inner bushes with new bushes. If you are going to go to the trouble of replacing the upper inner bushes, then you would be crazy not to put in a good quality Camber/Caster kit, (which is essentially adjustable upper inner control arm bushes).

Boy is this a common problem. I do not know the answer but i can say this. My sprint has a completely new front end including koni's, k-mac caster kit (highly recommended) and EVERY bush has been replaced with nolathane. Guess what? still clunks. Go figure.

I had a similar prob in my xf and it was the ilder arm , i had it in the elxr6 after i had lower control arm bushes replaced , all they did was to regrease them with heaps of grease and it hasnt made a noise since.
Thing is they kept saying it was form the bushes in the camber kit till the redide the control bushes.

Sprayed the two middle sway bar mount bushes with WD40 and let it soak overnight. Seems to have gotten rid of the clunk. Have to spend the time and grease them properly me thinks.

i have the same noise at slow speeds over a speed hump or slowly rolling to a stop on the brakes. although I dont hear it very often. It only came after I put in a adjustable camber/castor kit and lowered springs on my EL..

Me has, when you are going slowly and break or go over small bumps (speed hump for eg.) the car clunks and groans!!
