Hi all,

I am faced with the prospect now of having to have my diff heavily modified to run decent brakes and stop my seals dieing a horrible death every time I hang a burnout.

But as an upside the $950 conversion comes with a new set of axles.

So its got me thinking, why spend all that money and keep 28 spline? I figure for $100 extra I might as well so the 31 spline axles but then the real question kicks in.... Spool it or detriot locker?

Now I have been for quick rides in a couple of detriot locker equiped cars and have to admit I liked what I saw. But I have never really looked into buying one for myself... Until now

So basically what I'm asking is:
1. Really, how comparable are they to a mini spool in a straight line?
2. How good are they at turning corners, eg at a track day? Would a spool be better here?
3. Do they survive hardcore burnouts?
4. Is my tightly packed LSD likely to be better overall?

The car is 99% track work, on the rare occasion I take it on the street I try to keep it as unnoticeable as possible and having to light the tyers up to turn a corner doesn't sound like fun, plus its another excuse for the cop when they're slapping a canary on my windscreen. So please, give me your opinions!!!

I dont see what you see in burnouts...but thats another thing completely...

Like everything on a performace car, its a matter of how much you are willing to compromise. I had a spool in my car and i removed it the next day. It was the worst mod i have ever done to a car. I swapped the spool for a detroit locker which was a good compromise. I dont know if you would want it in an everyday driver though.

A limited slip is definately the best option for a daily driver, but burnouts will kill it. Why would you want to do burnouts anyway????????

If you are changing the centre, definately upgrade to 31 spline at the same time.

Thanks for the advise racer.

The car never was and never will be an everyday driver, once a month on the road if its lucky.

Really I don't do a lot of burnouts... but on the rare occasion i decide to fry a set I don't want to have to rebuild the damn diff every time.

i like the idea of a locker, spools and mini spools are not for street use because they are basically turing your two axles into one... there for no give in the diff, as soon as you try to turn a corner you will realise this, spools will eventually break an axle.
like i said i like the idea of a locker or you could get some very heavy duty clutches for your LSD

It all depends on your budget. If you dont mind spending the money, go an LSD or Detroit.

The LSD will be fine with burnouts if you keep away from doughnuts. The 9" can take a bit of hell. As for a spool. I just removed one from my car after driving it for 2 months on the street. 3.9 gears, 28sp axels. It's a cheap way out, but brings understeer, excessive tyre wear and suspension wear with it. The bearings will also tend to dye pretty quickly. However, in my opinion, you cant go past a spool for burnouts, doughnuts etc for the money spent.

I'd put the axle size decision down to how much traction you have, but then again, whats an extra $100, probably well worth doing.
