Does anyone know of a diagnostic test you can perform via your dashboard to test the car? If so explain in detail how to perform!

The dash (Instrument Cluster) diagnostic mode will only give very little information regarding the ECU.

I.E. the only things you can deduce from the instrument cluster are

Coolant temp, (From sender)
Oil pressure, (From Sender)
Battery Voltage,
Gear Position, (From the Gear lever position sender),
R.P.M.
Speed. (From Transmission Sender)

The ECU gets its values from these senders, (and many more).

If these values are corrupted, then the ECU can be sent into limp home mode, (depending on the problem).

The best way to properly trace a problem is to do an ECU test.
But if any of the above (especially the Gear position) are stuffed, then at least you have some idea where a problem may lie.

Hope this helps

Hey Snavy - Do you have a manual ???
On mine it comes up with little letters on the bottom right of the odo display, eg P r n D 3 2 1.
I think even on manuals it comes up with n d and maybe even r.
(supposedly EF/EL 8's have reduced torque (from the ECU, when in reverse ????)

Yeah, I know what you mean,
It would be a very nice feature if it did this, unfortunately, it only shows what position the gear lever is in.
(saves you 1/16 of a second from looking down at the shift lever).:p

Its a good way to determine if the sender is stuffed, but apart from that, its of very little use. (Unless you are a big fan of the fairlane dash !)
