I have recently bought a 9 inch out of a 78 LTD. It has disc brakes and a "really thick housing across the center". 2.75 non-lsd

A friend says that 9 inches come in two different stlyes. Mine and a "less thick across the centre" one.

He also has told me that the thick one will not fit in my XD, the sway bar won't bolt on, and a Borg Warner/drum to a 9 inch disc is a drama with the handbrake.

Any ideas out there?

I did a search on the site and couldn't find any info.

Probably the F series truck housing and a light vehicle housing. It'll fit. Generally the truck 9" diffs don't have a filler plug on the centre. It's in the housing. Plenty of ways around the handbrkae cable issue. Autocables & Auto Shades

That will be the XC type housing which is larger in the centre and tapers out to the tubes as opposed the XY to XB housings.There are kits available with bigger U-bolts to suit the sway bay and will fit the XD no problem.As long as the calipers are to the rear just use a factory XD disc handbrake cable.Be sure to swap the cable though in the arm where the front cable joins under the drivers seat.The disc and drum use different holes there for different leverage.

Definately XC housing. The filler plug should be in the centre. It's a grub scrub basically. You can definately fit a sway bar on that without a problem.

If you can't find a filler plug on the centre? You'll find the centres originally from an F series.

Sorry to sound dumb, but do you mean a grub screw on the centre removable bit that the tailshaft fits onto?

If no grub screw then it's a F truck centre? How do F trucks change diff oil then?

Also, conveniently my friend has a non-xc drum brake diff he can swap me. What is the difference in the housings? Are they not as sturdy?

seen many 9 inches, and the one you have will fit.

The biggest issue you mention is the brakes. The LTD has discs and you have drums.

Now your drums may go straight on (its all to do with the mounts welded to the diff), but the better option is to fit the discs.. 4 wheel discs beats rear drums every day. You will have to use the 78 model units anyway. Just remember to fit the correct master cylinder.

Sure this is a bit of stuffing about, but its all bolt on, so not rocket science.

Oops another thought...the diff is out of a 78....the year they started making XD's...it won't be that different!

Further to my comments there and seeing your pics.....its identical to what i yanked out of another XD.

Its a bolt in application!

It's a plug which you undo with a 1/4" ratchet. It's usually in the passenger side of the centre. F truck housings have a drain/filler plug like a borg warner diff.
