Dick Johnson Racing today announced their attack on the 2004 Konica Minolta Series will feature two cars, new sponsorship, new drivers & a new crew, with expectations for a DJR 1-2 in the Konica Minolta Series.

DJR announced today a 3 year sponsorship arrangement with appliance giant Fujitsu General, a plan which has come into fruition during the later stages of 2003. Fujitsu sponsorship will be the primary sponsor on the two Konica Minolta AU’s, and will also feature on the Shell Helix Racing BA Falcons.

The DJR Konica Minolta program will be titled “Team Fujitsu”, further throwing weight behind the support the Asian-based organisation is placing in Dick Johnson Racing.

Young charger Owen Kelly piloting the #71 Fujitsu AU with high hopes of a championship title, with 2003 Konica campaigner & former Historic Touring Car racer Jose Fernandez behind the wheel of the #81 Fujitsu AU Falcon. Fernandez, although a relative new-comer to V8Supercars, is expected to support Kelly to a Championship title, as well as run at the “pointy end of the Top 10”.

Dick Johnson Racing will become the only team in V8Supercars to run two cars in both the V8Supercar Championship and the Konica Minolta Series, a task which has called upon employment of 6 new staff during the Christmas/New Year off-season break.

DJR has also announced a new Youth Development program, in which young talent will be given to participants involved with the view of spotting the next V8Supercar Champion. Team Owner Dick Johnson was excited about the move, also stating that those involved in the program will be given plenty of miles in a V8Supercar.

“It won’t be a short couple of laps – we’ll be giving them quite a long spell behind the wheel to give them a better understanding of the car & an opportunity to hone their skills,” Johnson stated.

The DJR Youth Development program is also supported by Fujitsu, and has already begun support of young hopefuls intending to crack into V8Supercar racing.

Team Fujitsu will be testing at Queensland Raceway on Tuesday, 17th February, before heading to Goulburn’s Wakefield Park circuit for Round 1 of the Konica Minolta V8Supercar Series on February 21/22.

Great stuff!! A good opportunity for some young blokes and proof good sponsorship can still be found.

Hope it's the start of DJR's resurgence.

The sponsorship Mr Fernandez secured in 2003, was walked up to DJR and splashed across the 2 Konica cars, and some stickerage on the main series cars.

Mr Fernandez did the good work finding these sponsors in the first place, and saw that a linkage with a L1 team would provide some credibility to a major sponsor of this nature.

Well done to Owen Kelly for coming along for the ride

And dont expect Mr Fernandez to take the 4th seat in a DJR Falcon at Sandown/Bathurst either...
