I mentioned it to the service guy when it last had an oil change and all he said was "yeah these engines do that, it's because all the oil drains to the bottom of the engine after you turn it off". My point to him was that I've owned several other cars and they have NEVER done this.. not even my old VH commie with 214,000kms on the clock, but he wasn't phased.
I'd like to know from other BA XR8 owners/drivers if they have been affected by the same issue.

Hi Steve, YES I am experiencing start up rattle with my 2005 Ford Falcon XR8 BA, it last all of 2-3 seconds, it's currently at mechanics been there for 24hour period, I have received phone call advising that the timing chain is issue quoted between $2500-4500 in Sydney.
The problem is with the oil pressure, and the timing chain tensioner, the O ring seal leaks and the oil pressure drops allowing the tensioner to slack off, the "rattle" is the tensioner rattling against the chain until the motor has built up the oil pressure again.
On the oil side of theings FORD recomend that you put in a 0w40 oil- WAY to thin for our running conditions, A 0w oil will still crank over at -35c but give you F**K all high temp protection, As changeing to a 15w60 will still crank over -25c and give a very good high temp protection, this is what i use in my FPV GT.
shane3 is correct there was a problem with some of the o rings getting damaged when engine were assembled thus causing oil to get past the seal and making it clatter. some are worse than others. if yours is bad take it to your dealer and they will fix it under warrantee but it does take a day or so.
mine used to tick, done a headgasket job, new head etc and no ticks, i get it every now and then (only ever on cold starts) but rarely get them now, im using 20.50 penrite oil
O.K. Well mine had tick tick, hardly a clatter, for a few seconds, usually when cold when she was brand new. I thought it would go away (Ford faith-Ford faith) and after running her down to the dealer and them staring at her for 5 minutes (nothing else)with the bonnet up- it did!!!
I have a ba xr8 2005 with 150000km on it that tics for 2-3secs on cold start up (maybe 50% of the time). Have been told its noisy lifters by two different mechanics the last one added an aditive to it and said to run it in then do another oil change and add more additive to it. He said its a hell of a job to replace them so maybe just have to live with it?
