I recently changed the clutch in my XR and about a week later it started to develop a clunking noise when putting your foot on the clutch. I was told it would be the clips on the clutch fork. So i have now also changed the clutch fork and the same thing happened about a week later. Has anyone had the same problem?? If so what was the fix coz i'm getting sick of pulling this thing out.
Does anyone know what the fault with the release bearings was??

Any help would be appreciated...

G'day Jase.

I had the clutch in mine (EL2XR8) replaced about 2 months after I got it. No, it's not what you're thinking :) There was a pinprick oil leak into the clutch itself, causing a strange kind of rattling/vibration sound at about 1700rpm. This fortunately was fixed under warranty, and along with labour and a few other things, saved me the best part of $2000!! I've heard a bit of a clunk from the clutch when it's cold, but nothing regular or too unusual.

I seem to remember the mech saying something about the clips when I got it back, but it musn't have been important since I've forgotten :) Sorry mate!

Keep us posted anyhow..

Cheers
Mike

I have a weird feeling in my clutch when I press it down at the very top of its release. I got a guy at work to check it out and he said it worked fine for him. He looked at it, said it has a new clutch plate in it but the guy at my work said they prob took a shortcut and didn't machine the flywheel becuase thats how cars salesmen work(take shortcuts everywhere to save $$). So anyways.. when it heats up it would cause a slight shudder from the heat coming of a slight bump or un-even wear on the surface.

Ok, here goes for the long elpaination after alot of chasing up. Ok, i spoke to 2 ford dealers about this problem and whouldn't you know it, they weren't much help. I then got on the phone to PBR (they make all the clutch's for ford. So instead of paying over $450 from ford, they charge a little over $320) They said that although the clutch that was supplied to me would be right, it not the one that should really be used. I was supplied with an 1194 and it should be a 1195 (all aftermarket books list the 1194) They told me that ford know they are a problem and they had a meeting with them less than a month ago to discuss rectifying the poor clutch design. I was then sent to Herrods. After speaking to the guy there for a bit, he agreed that it is a fauly clutch and told me that pbr, ford and him are working together to improve the old design. Aparently clutch shudder appears a fair bit and thats one of the reasons why they're gonna do something about it. He also recommened that i fit the rpm1195 kit as it's a heavier clutch.

hope that all made sense....
So, i'm now going to fit the rpm1195 on the weekend, i'll let you all know how it goes...

Hi Jase,

Do you know if this Clutch fault will also effect an ED XR8 ?? I have an 1194 in a box in the garage waiting to be installed (I was supposed to get it done on Monday, but my BF's front rotor's cracked and we are getting them replaced first so I can borrow his car to get to work)

thanks
:)

P.S - No the rotors that cracked werent DBA cross drilled.

It would also be handy to know whether this is also a carry over from EF/EFII XR6&8s so we know what happens when ... clunk.

Be interested to hear the end of the saga.

Ok, i went through all the part listings yesterday from pbr and daikin and the only model that lists an 1195 is the gt everything else says 1194. After speaking to pbr, in their book that they have there, all the xr8s that list an 1194 have been crossed out and 1195 handwritten in. 1194 was for the EB standard V8. Herrods recommend using the rpm1195 kit. If you have an 1194 kit sitting there, i would get it swapped for the 1195 which is heavier duty or even the rpm1195 which is better again...

Hi,

Jase - where did you get the 1195 from?? I spoke to BPR, they have non in stock.
Ford dont stock them (they insisted that the 1195 would not fit a falcon), and Repco only have 1 in the country (in WA).

Hey Kelli,

As for what ford say....well i have worked as a mechanic part time for over six years now and only take what they say as advisement not fact. You'll find the 1195 is the heavy duty version of the 1194 and probably wont notice that much difference at all by looking at it. As for getting one, i dont why that should be a problem. I got the guys at bursons to get me an rpm1195 (which came from PBR) on thursday and they had it in same day.

Opps few too many replies there....

If you want another opinion, give Herrods in Melbourne a call. Their number is (03) 9464 5100.
Oh, if you want an example of how smart the average joe is at your local ford dealers. The other week whilst i was getting some parts i watched three guys rev the crap out of an AU whilst steam was pissing out the exhaust (blown head gasket) they just kept reving it saying what you think it is mate to each other. My car will never goto a dealer!!!

Jase - Yeah, I spoke to Herrod yesterday and they said to get the 1195.
BPR said the standard 1195 would be best for me, as the Heavy Duty 1195 (the rpm1195 ?) is apparently too heavy for the average female.

Anyways - The 1195 in WA (apparently the only one in the country) is on it way to me.

I dont belive too much of ford say these days - the other week I picked up a air con hose for my BF's EF Fairmont, and they insisted I needed a different one, but it fitted perfectly. (There excuse for that was that his car cant possibly be a EF then.?!?!)

:)

PS - Paul, I am doing the clutch for the first time - @ 177000km's

I'd be going by what herrods say over ford since if they (ford) have a problem they speak to herrod. My clutch was changed at 80,000kms and still had half of its life left. Only problem is they dont work too good with oil from gearbox all over em.

yep I agree.. Any ford dealers rip us all off. Like I don't want ot take my car back to them.
but I have to.. Ive been told after I had her serviced that she has a oil leak in the OSR Shock Absorber. and I'm thinking what after 20000kms..
does anyone know what sort of shocks and springs are in the S/XR6??

Mike - I havent paid for the 1195 yet. (I put it on my Dad's account)
The 1194 was $260 from Ford so I dont think it will too much more expensive that that (possibly even cheaper). But then again - that is Dealer price, so trade price will be more, and retail even more than that.

I will ask tomorrow and find out how much it is.

:)
