I recently acquired a "93" Escort Wagon LX, manual transmission. The ignition has been removed from the dash and is hanging under steering colunm. It looks to be all in-tact. There is a small white plastic box about an inch w and length, with a very tiny button. Wondering if this particular part has to be attached somewhere to depress the button when turning ignition with key.its just hanging there with the ignition component. Ignition turns smoothly all lights and equipment, idiot lights come on but when turned to start postion it kills charge in battery and starter won't turn over. It just goes dead. Can anyone help me.

Are you sure you dont just have a flat battery ? You can have all the lights but that takes negligable power compared to turning engine . Try a jump start .On all the Escorts I worked on or had , the ignition was on the steering column and part of the steering lock assembly . Cant remember coming across one on the dash , so no help there I'm afraid .

See if this helps you in identifying the part ,
