I know we have played this one to death, but the latest round of press releases raises some questions for me!

If they are right it looks like every engine option in the line up will be serously endoured with power. Of particlur interest is the margin between the six and the bottom rung 8. We look like we are talking somewhere between a 10 and 20 kw between XR6 and XR8. Is that enough of a gap to make the eight a proposition and will we see a return of the Ef XR6 days?

Some, regardless of power difference will always buy an 8, other the 6.

I agree, there should be more of a kw difference between the 2, say 80kws.

Well depends what the base 8 will be, if they stay at 175kw, then a tuned 6 will be more viable. But i'm sure ford will make their hower house the V8 but a hot six will challenge a base 8, but thats it all other range of 8's are ahead.

Good point about owner preferences, and I don't think Ford will turn its back on the 8 for a while yet but been counters aren't normal people.
If the 6 gets to 220kw then the XR8 needs 250 min in my opinion

Well since joining up on Ford Forums it seems to me that having an extra two cylinders is enough for some.

This is a damn hard task working out the proposed lineup I reckon. I think the best way is to work out proposed min/max power for V8 and the same for the 6, then slot the cars in. So lets have a go...

min/max for V8..................220kw-----300+kW (with 1 exception  )

Now V8 models that fit in here would be..

AV XR8..............................240kW
AV LE XR8.........................260kW (FTE)
AV TE/TS/TL......................275kW (FTE)
AV GT...............................310kW (FTE)
Limited AV GTHO..............350kW  (FTE)

Now min/max for 6...........170kW-----220kW (with 1 exception)

AV XR6.............................190kW
AV XR6T............................220kW
AV XR6FteT.......................240kW (FTE)

Well something like that anyway

I must say I like your engine power brief Jem. Did you guys notice that the power levels for this years stroker models and the new motors for the AV weren't that different. Probably a sign that the companies are going to put a self impossed limit on. Both GT models mentioned were at the same power level.
I wouldn't mind if they stopped listing Peak pwer figures and just listed it as "sufficient " like David said in the Tickford article yesterday.

I thought it was a good point raised in the article yesterday. Why would you want to ring the neck out of a motor for peak power if it's to the detriment of the engine? (I mean in factory cars minge.. ;) ) I'd be more than happy for the AV to have say 240 from the XR8 and 280 coming from the T's. As long as the performance of the car is better than the equvalent Holden who really gives a rats arse? Perfect situation would be for the XR8 to have 240kw and weigh in at around 1500kg. Not likely to happen, but imagine the times you'd see from it.. yummy..

Lets look at the overlap right now:

V8
175kW @ 4600/395Nm @ 3200
200Kw @ 5000/420Nm @ 3750
220kW @ 5250/435Nm @ 4000

i6
172kW @ 5000/374Nm @ 3500

Massive 3Kw and 24Nm diffrence between the base 8 and the best i6. 18Kw and 44Nm (@higher rpm) between the mid range 8 and the i6. The Top of the line T engine has a healthy 38Kw, and 59Nm on the 6.

However I doubt that diffrence will stay.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty unimpressed with the 8 so far, higher insurance, higher fuel consumption, slight performance increase. Yet it sells well enough.

Turbo six who knows where that will go. I would expect more than 400Nm, more than 220Kw.

How about an optional supercharger on the eight a la 300 + if the sixes are going turbo - lets compare apples to apples as far as induction goes for both 6 & 8, then the expected gap between the two will remain.....

I think you might be a bit tough there ol chap.

As far as fuel consumption goes I got 8.87 litres on a highway trip over 178. From what the guys here say I will back my car in the fuel consumption stakes.

Costs me next to nothing extra for the XR8 over the XR6 VCT for insurance. Rego is a different matter.

Au XR8 has a little bit better than a slight advantage over the six, but I understand what you are saying

How would you guys feel if say the next GT had no officail power rating from the factory and instead do something like David said and just say sufficient?

Be fine with me as long as the performance is there. To say the engine has "sufficient" power then to have it flogged by the GTS in the performance stakes would mean there wasn't "sufficient" power in the engine at all!!
It'd be a briiliant idea to under rate the engine ala Cobra R. To have the power listed at say 250kw yet everyone is getting 280-290 on the dyno. It'd give the car a bit of legend status because things would not be as they seemed!!.. :D

Yes it goes with out saying that a model that was to take this route as a marketing ploy would have to have class leading performance. I like the idea myself for similar reasons to Chucky.
I even suggested it as something Ford might want to consider for the T series at launch a few years ago.

In the VL the 6 had 114-118kw and the 5.0 when it finnally arrived had 120Kw. Mean while the turbo 6 had 150Kw standard and more easy to obtain. Holden still sold V8's tho, first time however that the cops chose a six over the 8's for a pursuit car afaik.

Future spec sheet?

Power : Adiquate
Torque: Yes
turning circle : small
1/4 mile : low

I think Australian manufacturers should volentarly adopt a Japanese type power rating. Like, 300Kw or 350kw cealing offically. That way safety nazis can whine about something else, and real power can keep going up..

Does it really matter if a car has 300kw or 320Kw? Really isn't it really how fast/quick it is that really matters?

Love those power figures JEM:cool:

I would expect the turbo XR6 to be slower than the XR8 but i really think it needs to be quicker than the base 8.

As powerfull as the Ts will be i hope they find a bit extra for some GTs.
