While cars often fall short of those figures, it’s especially alarming among vehicles where efficiency is a major selling point. Ford advertises that both the C-Max hybrid and Fusion Hybrid get 47 mpg across the board.
The Ford badging warns that actual MPG might vary, but Consumer Reports says its tests are generally very close to the EPA’s numbers and are sometimes higher. In this case, the results were consistently low.
Generally regarded as an unbiased source because it purchases the vehicles it tests, Consumer Reports tests turned the Fusion Hybrid up with 39 mpg overall. That’s a figure split between 35 mpg in the city and 41 on the highway.
Meanwhile, the C-Max Hybrid got 37 mpg overall, or 35 in the city and 38 on the highway. That means the Fusion and C-Max Hybrids are off by 10 and 8 mpg respectively, which is the biggest difference Consumer Reports says it’s ever seen.
The largest previous discrepancy, the publication said, was with the Toyota Prius C. In this case the numbers are about 20 percent shy of what’s advertised.
Last month, Hyundai was forced to change the stickers advertising fuel mileage on 27 models after being audited by the EPA, which found the automakers claims were overstated. Now, Hyundai is issuing prepaid debit cards to compensate affected vehicle owners — a move that is expected to cost the company roughly $100 million per year.
