Tire pressure monitoring systems that warn drivers of low air levels in tires have been around for a number of years now, and have become a pretty popular feature given the fact that most people don’t exactly check their tire pressure on a regular basis. Recently, Ford filed a patent for a tire pressure loss detection and alert system that goes beyond the standard TPMS by comparing tire pressure levels between all four tires and determining ahead of time if there’s a problem, then notifying the driver before that tire goes completely flat or loses a significant amount of air pressure.

Now, this new Ford patent takes that simple idea in an entirely new direction and seems more geared toward off-road vehicles in general. In fact, it provides an alternative way to check on tire pressure by determining if air levels are outside of a predetermined range, then alerting the driver as something of a backup safeguard.

What’s particularly interesting about this Ford patent is that it allows for lower-than-ideal tire pressures when a vehicle is contained within a specific area, such as a race track or off-road course, which would call for some deflation to improve traction. If the vehicle travels outside of this area, it would resume notifying the driver that their tire pressure is low and could cause damage to the tire. It’s an interesting idea for sure, and one that may serve a purpose in the future given how popular off-roading has become.
