I was wondering what all the abbreviations stand for on cars (Ford's in particular). I remember that GT or GTHO stood for one thing before the great media frenzie that stopped the Phase IV's ever hitting the production lines in the mid 70's, but I can't remember exactly what. They did change it to tone down the image and reputation of the vehicles being very powerfull.

That got me thinking about what all of the others ment. A quick google found alot of information on VIN Numbers and their history but nothing on the abreviations.

Drop a post if you have any info on this topic.

PS - Do a thread mine, this has been asked, and answered before from memory - try the falcon or fpv forum history.

GT = Grand Touring
GT-HO = Grand Touring Handling Option
GT-A = Grand Touring Automatic
GT-P = Grand Touring Premium
GS = Grand Sport
L = Luxury
GL = Grand Luxury (strange for a base model though)
S= Sport
XR (2, 3, 4, 6, 7 & 8) = Experimental Racing

Hope this helps.

I have heard HO = High Octane

Phase IV's.... That whole saga was a great shame... Although they weren't a total loss I suppose. We can still appreciate them, just not drive them.

How good would it be to have them on the road?

Ah didn't know that about XR.

What's XT? Anything at all? I'd call it the PP if I was incharge.

No not poo poo :p

The X is from the XR range and the T is for Touring. Sort of a Sports Tourer.

Does anyone else have the falcon gt video? I found it at a regular store... it has the history of the GT up to the point of the EL GT. Apparently it was a show they made into DVD.

Highpoints
========

- Some really funny old commercials (..MORE mustang!)
- Funny stories of from Alan Moffat and what happens when you need to go to the toilet at bathurst
- Footage of a surviving phase 4

Oh...and of course, the absolute ballbreaking powerhouse that was the phase 3 gtho (man they flew!)

See i've also heard that HO was Homogolated Options, IE race designed options into a road car to qualify for a race event.....

Yeah, I've got the DVD. Wish it had more on the EB and EL. Good stuff on the Phase 4 though!

I understood it as
GT = Grand Tourismo (Grand Touring if you must speak English)
S = Sports
GL = General? (I am guessing on that one)
GLi = General with multi-point injection
GT-P (Premium)
XR & XT personally i dont think they are supposed to stand for anything
GTHO = Grand Tourismo Homogolated Option
LTD = Lincoln Type Design (not Limited)

Homologated Options was a name used by Phase Autos to sell their Hot Up kits for late model Falcons. Not used by Ford Motor Company.
