i have recently bought a standard el v8 auto sedan. so far it has a lukey exhaust and k&n filter. i am planning to turn it into a tough streeter and i need some advice about what parts to look at. for starters i am going to ditch the stock heads and manifold and get some trickflow items. what heads/manifold should i get based on the fact that the car is daily driven on the street and hardly raced? apart from the manifold and heads i am also going to fit a bigger cam, probably a crane 2030. will this cam be suited to my needs? will i need to upgrade anything else on the motor with these mods and how much power should i expect with this type of setup? please add any other comments that will help me out. thanks in advance guys :)

read the other threads below plenty on this topic!
exhaust is best place to start!
Make sure your heads, manifold are matched to your cam rev range etc!

I have an EL2 XR8 running TFS heads,inlet and rckers with 65mm throttle body(stock), 55mm MAF(stock),19lb injectors(stock), stock headers with a cat back dual 2 1/4" exhaust and last dyno was 163.8rwkw.
I have recently swapped to 24lb injectors and a 73mm MAF and am yet to get it dynoed again.

Stock cam and auto.

Keep to TFS you can't go too far wrong. 2030 cam maybe beter than TFS l cam due to weight and diff ratio of Falcon [Compared to Mustangs ]& throttle body would be the last thing to change as maf, inlet & injectors are way behind.

You probably want to lose the MAF for something a little larger. At the same time, you might want to consider bigger injectors. The stock 19's will probably be pretty marginal in the 220+ power range you'll end up in...
TB might also want to go (but probably pretty optional).

When you say lukey exhaust, is this a cat back system, or a full system including extractors. You definitely want aftermarket extractors.

Also remember, unless you get a high-stall, you need to be careful with cam selection etc (don't want to lose too much bottom end).

Yer the Lukey system is the full bolt on 3 inch system inclding extractors. It sounds absolutely awesome, loud and clean. This is what I am thinking so far. TFS Manifold and heads, 2500 stall, 3.9 gears, cam, T Series snorkel, yella terra roller rockers and a suitable ecu upgrade and tune. I am still unsure about what cam and manifold to get as I want the car to be streetable and very torquey.

Try Unichip for your ECU upgrade, and also try and get a 700mm T/B, and I think you mentioned that you were going to get a bigger MAF, so the rest is fine, the 2030 is a very popular choice at the moment with a fair few people (including myself) looking at getting it.

I am doing another dyno run on the 28th of January
so I will know what difference the injectors and MAF make.

Torquey maybe, streetable no! I think your going overboard with the 2500 stall and 3.9 gears with the standard box. I reckon that 3.73 gears are great for the standard auto (as I have them), 3.9 would be too high and combined with a 2500 stall I believe would be uneconomical and a bitch to drive on the street, particularly given the type of cam you are looking at installing.

I would save the money on the stall and invest it in the engine.

Why upgrade the stall converter when the stock one is 2400rpm... I couldn't believe this when someone told me so when I rang a transmission specialist to check it out he couldn't believe it either. As Big Mick said, save the money and invest it in other mods.

As for the diff ratio goes I've got a 9" diff on my EB Fairmont with 4.11 gears. The accelaration is noticable and the fuel economy is not much worse if you drive it normal and in economy mode because the transmission grabs the 4th gear much earlier then with it did with stock 3.27 ratio. Only when I use Power mode around the town and when I give the car a hard time, only then does the car drink more petrol. When I raced another 5lt EB Fairmont with simular mods to mine I had a 1 car advantage and that was up to 100kph with a friend in a car.

If I was you I would get afftermarket heads. Try to track down EB-GT or a ED Sprint intake manifold & fit a 70mm Throttle Body, get Crane 2030 cam & fit a Vortech Supercharger if the budget allows...You will find that the car will behave normal in trafic and when you tramp it the thing will go like a bulit.

Just a quick question about the Trickflow manifold. I was looking at one on an EL XR8 the other day and I noticed that it was on back to front with the Trickflow logo facing the wrong way. I realise that the throttle body is on the wrong side when the manifold is facing the correct way but I have seen it facing the right way before. What gives?

Oops one more thing. What kind of times should I expect on a stock 302 windsor with a Vortec S Trim kit and decent exhaust?
