Ive heard of using some thin fishing line and using it to cut the foam/sticky backing behind the strip?

The hair dryer might even be better as there is less chance of getting it too hot and bubbling the paint.

Don't know if this applies to your car, but on my EA S the red bumper strip is an insert. Remove the bumper and you'll see how it fits into the ends and how to pull it out.

Ok.... never tried it on an AU, but this is how I have removed them in the past...

1. grab screw driver.
2. jam screw driver behind plastic stripe.
3. pull (very hard)

the double sided tape that holds them on will give way before the paint does.

Would probably work on the EA. I'm a bit rusty as it was a while back. I had my bumper off to align it and I fixed up the tape while I was there, because it was a touch too long and bubbled near the end where it goes behind the bumper.
