Just before fitting a new radiator I tried the shroud/fan unit on it for fit and it looks to be okay. There are some slight differences between the ED radiator and the EF/EL radiator but they don't impact greatly, except that on the EF/EL radiator the shroud/fan unit would be slightly better secured.
It occurred to me that the best way to do it would be to actually fit an EF or EL radiator as well - that way all the mounting points on the fan/shroud unit could be done up ridgy-didge.
There's a difference between EF and EL fan units in that on the EF fan unit, one of the fans has two speeds (low/high) and the other is just on or off (ie. on=high). On the EL fan unit, both fans are just on or off.
My big plan was to get an EF fan unit and have it wired up so one fan came on low whenever the aircon was on and then both would come on (high) when the set temp was reached - and was very disappointed to discover that the EL one didn't have the two speed fan - but in another topic someone pointed out that the two speed system was probably dropped because it was found to be pointless (not enough flow on "low" to be any use?) - so now I'll just wire it all up like a dual Davies setup - ie. one fan on whenever the aircon is on and both on when the set temp is reached.
I'm still hunting for an electronic Thermo-Switch.
