I was just thinking earlier, how would people around here define what is and isn't a ricer?

I'm not talking hard and fast rules, but a general definition.

For me, ricers would generally "feature" these things:
  • Over-the-top aero kits, such as huge spoilers...
  • A boot or hatch so full of sub woofer and other audio gear that nothing can be stored in there...
  • A heap of stickers or 'decals'...
  • An exhaust tip that is so big it could have hidden Suddam Hussain himself, and might still be Osama's hideout...
  • A stereo setup that's bigger (and more powerful) then the engine that 'powers' the car...

And usually, they're basic model Lancers, Hyundai's, and other cheapish, FWD 4 cylinders.

I'm sure there is more that has slipped my mind, but I'd be interested to see what other people think.

More KW in the stereo then the engine
lights...and more lights (neons under..lil blue ones here and there...even the exhaust tip)
Plastic fantastic!

I know its rice when my 8 year old boy yells..."Look at that one...NICE!"

I agree with all of the above.

Add:
Extra guages on the a-pillar,
Lairy coloured seat belt shoulder pads,
Headlight "skins" for that twin headlight look,
Exhaust note that sounds like flatulence after a dodgy curry.

Cheers........

I agree with what you guys have said but with a few clarifications...

-Big huge audio systems in small cars are fine as long as the car is built/set-up for the purpose of audio shows/competition above all else. Otherwise, for those ppl with big overkill systems that don't put their cars in comps etc. then it becomes an impractical every-day car and I agree - rice.
-I think that if you use those moulded factory-style pods, A-pillars can be a neat way to mount extra gauges. Of course, this is only valid if the gauges are subtle and have a genuine purpose/need.
-Clear surround tail-lights can look good on the right model/style/colour of car, but more often than not it is a rice-factor thing.

I think rice tends to consist of mods which make the car look 'faster' or 'different' without achieving any actual purpose or performance gain. In saying that, subtle and stylish mods to make the car look nice are fine, but ricer mods usually are far from subtle/stylish and try to make the car look like it's better than it is rather than just trying to make it look nice. Same goes for engine sound etc. of course.

I think that if someone wants to make their car look nice then its not a problem. Nice mags, bodykit and a small exhaust system are ok on small cars (some people cant afford better cars). But when they go overboard by adding huge wings and REALLY loud exhausts, its pointless rice material.

My mate has a mazda 323 with the loudest exhaust on it. He reckons that he's king shit with it, but I cant stand riding in his car because of the loud noise.

Remember, rice isnt just on 4cyl cars, Ive seen huge wings on stock Falcons which I laughed pretty hard at...

People claiming to have something they clearly dont. Like TX3 stickers all over their 4 door lasers.
Wings (in moderation), big shiney wheels, bodykits (again, in moderation), even a couple extra gauges (as long as their not just for show), are all fine, as long as they are used tastefully. Problem with that is, peoples taste varies so much.

I use the term to describe asian built cars, but not really to put them down. i think a more appropriate term for these things is "wank".

Nah, the normal Escort items. Just like the rear item seen on my avatar. The front item can be seen in this picture, although it doesn't stand out much, seeing as it has been painted the same colour as the cars panels.

Anything FACTORY cant be rice.

Like for example the newish supras with their curvey body shape that have a rather big wing that curves, i dont mind that because it suits the shape of the body.

The MaDDeSTMaN: No its not rice because your car came out with those spoilers.

The funny thing is that because they make the exhausts so big the car probably makes less power than a standard one and sounds crap as well. Total rice in my opinion. Just makes me laugh seeing a 3 inch exhaust on a stock Hyundai Excel that probably wouldn't even need the flow of a 2 inch exhaust. Don't exhausts need some backpressure or it becomes vacuum.
