I got a XBOX. Yes. -> A XBOX.

Now I just have to get some games for it. Damn I am so dying to use it. Tomorrow I'm going to try to get a copy of Project Gotham Racing.

Anyone else got one?

:edit: BTW, the first one who turns this into an XBox vs. Gamecube vs. PS2 war get's added to the jerkoff list.

I don't have any video game consoles, but I'm sick of buying them. Every year the kids want the newest machines. In the past few years I've lost track of the Segas, Nintendos, Playstations and Dreamcasts. Hell, we were damn happy to have Pong when I was a kid.

I'll refrain now from rehashing my old "Dad used to cut the pockets out of our jeans so we would have something to play with" joke.

Xbox: Perfect for Server Farms?

Imagine Apache ported to be an Xbox 'game.' The port shouldn't be that difficult, since Microsoft is shipping Xbox Development Kits and developers can use the same tools they use for Windows applications.

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) wants the Xbox to remain a closed platform that only runs its slimmed-down version of Windows 2000, but since Linux was ported to the Sega Dreamcast, which has only 16 megabytes of memory and uses a Hitachi RISC chip, it seems inevitable that someone will try the Xbox Linux port.

However, that approach would miss the point. The killer port for the Xbox is not Linux. It's Apache.

People want to port Linux to the Xbox because it is a pretty powerful machine, sporting a 733 MHz Pentium III, and Microsoft will generously be selling it at a loss to keep the price -- around US$300 -- in line with other consoles. That price includes 64 megabytes of memory, a DVD drive, 100 Mbps Ethernet, and an 8-gigabyte hard disk.

A D V E R T I S E M E N T

Asking for Your Support

Paying $300 for a Linux machine is nice, but there are some problems. In particular, there is no support for standard peripherals such as a keyboard, mouse, printer, or modem. The machine has USB ports, but they are described as "customized" USB ports, which presumably means, "different enough from regular USB ports that you can't plug in any PC USB devices."

Since Microsoft is adamant that the Xbox will remain a console only and not morph into a PC, it will likely try to actively discourage anyone from producing peripherals for the Xbox USB ports.

I'll be Your Server

Now consider a Web server. Those machines are often run "headless" anyway, without a local keyboard, mouse, or monitor, and are administered remotely. All they need is a network tap.

The Xbox operating system has a lot of the standard Windows 2000 services removed. Still, all a Web server needs to do is read and write the hard drive, and then send and receive on the network -- a function that the Xbox OS must support since networked games require it.

Are You Game?

So imagine Apache ported to be an Xbox "game." The port shouldn't be that difficult, since Microsoft is shipping Xbox Development Kits and developers can use the same development tools they use for Windows applications. Unlike porting Linux, you wouldn't need to re-implement the entire operating system, just write an application that runs on top of it, like any other game developer.

This "Xpache" can store whatever configuration information it needs on the hard drive. You leave the DVD with Xpache on it inside your Xbox, sitting in your server closet. If something goes wrong, you just cycle the power remotely -- for example using an existing remote controlled power strip. Xpache is automatically reloaded off the DVD, and the server is up again.

While eight gigabytes is not a ton of storage (and the interface in the Xbox is IDE, not SCSI), it's enough for a small Web site. For servers with more data, Xpache could use a network storage device like the ones that Network Appliance sells.

Open and Shut Case

In fact, while we are re-purposing Xboxes for data center use, why not also use them for network storage? Network Appliance's cheapest models cost something like $15,000 for 50 gigabytes of storage, or $300 per gigabyte. An Xbox gives you eight gigabytes for the same price! Again, you just leave the DVD with the Xppliance "game" sitting in the Xbox, and it is ready to go whenever it is turned on.

So you could use one Xbox as your Web server, coupled with as many others as needed for your data storage needs. You could even crack the case open and install a bigger hard drive. That would presumably void the warranty, but who cares -- at $300 bucks a pop, the things are practically disposable anyway.

Finally, who can discount the coolness factor? You are some big Web hosting company, trying to woo an important client. You bring them back to your facility, throw open the door, and show them -- a room full of rack-mounted Xboxes!! Tell me that wouldn't clinch any sale.

If you have nothing useful or nice to say then clamp it. We have the first candidate for the jerkoff list.

First of all the XBox isn't going to be as versitile as everyone would hope. The hard drive has firmware on it that will only allow the XBox to read that drive. If you take it out and try to read it on a system capable of reading Linux, Fat32, FAT, and NTFS partitions they will all tell you that the drive is not partitioned. If you try to put a larger replacement hard drive in the XBox it will tell you that your XBox needs to be serviced. You can't overclock them. You would have to change the clock quartz crystal which would speed up not only the CPU but everything on the system which could prove very problematic.

I said I would buy PGR tomorrow. Well my sister approached me with a package tonight and said "Merry early Christmas". In the package was PGR!!!!! Thank you sister! I unpacked it like a dog in heat. I put it in the console and powered it up. After setting regional settings like time zones I was ready to play. When I played PGR I was amazed. The graphics are spectacular. Breathtaking. I have seen some of the locked cars which include a Mitsu Lancer EVO, Impreza WRX, F50, 360, Porsche Carerra GT, and tons of other kickass cars. I have gotten bronze metals on all the courses in arcade mode and I unlocked the Beetle RSI. They aren't trying to ripoff Gran Turismo, they are trying to deliver a new experience. I like it a lot so far. Also on the PGR disc included a demo of Fusion Frenzy and some non-interactive demos of other titles. The graphics are mesmerizing. I have played the PS2 in stores on non-interlaced LCD screens. The XBox looked fantastic on my normal interlaced TV screen. You guys just have to see it!

I will also have to say that I might buy a PS2 too. There are some really great titles on PS2 that I want as well. I have always been a Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo fan. I have a PS1. I just had to wait for both consoles to come out to compare them before I made a purchase. If I do buy a PS2 I will not buy their hard drive expansion or their broadband expansion though unless there is a compelling reason to. I am glad the XBox came with those as standard features though.

As long as you keep it outta my thread you can do whatever you want. I don't go into war threads like that because all of the bickering that goes on. If you like the bickering, then more power to you and your thread. You will not see me in there though.

Nope, it was never meant to be a "war thread", I'm not into bickering and stuff like that. I merely started the thread so that people could see the statistics of each system. Why would I want to bring that type of stuff into this thread? Hell, I don't have a favorite system. I love all game systems. I have at least 400 console games, although I hardly play them anymore. I just do not want you to think that I'm the type of person to deliberatly start a war thread or bickering.. the jerkoff statement was just kind of rude.
