This whole issue comes back to training car drivers. The tyre failures have been directly linked to underinflation (even below that specified by Ford). It is a shame Ford and Firestone have to pay out for people who should take care of their cars by checking tyre pressures regularly. I know Firestone deleted the cap construction on the American market tyres, but this was not the primary causal factor.

On aircraft, tyre failures must be investigated. Almost all tyre failures show a preceding tyre pressure loss on the data downloads. Same on trucks where loss of pressure is followed by thrown treads etc.

What do you guys think? Is this another case of idiots trying to make companies pay for their own negligence (not checking their car's tyre pressures)?

Apparently an American car mag got hold of an Explorer and simulated a tyre blowout and said they could handle it easy, even with no hands on the steering wheel.
They also go on to say that it might be the sudden loud noise that frightens Explorer drivers.

Personally I think it is a combination of things that leads to the Explorers roll problems, though I think alot of the drivers are to blame as they mostly drive on straight roads and drive in cars with crap suspension.

They probably thought it was a gunshot since the yanks are so gun happy.
Anyway I agree with Pete a lot of it is to do with driver training to handle these blowout situations and do regular checks of tyre pressure and condition of the tyres..... all of this helps.
