Why is it that so many people seem to think that any car which is much more then a few years old is not worth anything?

If I had a dollar for each time I've heard someone say words to the effect of "it doesn't matter, it's an old car anyway", I could probably afford a couple more 'old' cars...

It doesn't seem to matter what sort of car it is, or what condition the car is in... Even if the car in question was a showroom condition GTHO, people will still have no respect for it, because "it's an old car"

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest...

I have more respect for old cars (especially in mint condition) than new cars. When me and my mates sit at a pub on Rundle St (Adelaides cruise strip) we love to see mint old skool muscle (even Holdens and Valiants) than some 180sx with a huge aluminium spoiler and full sick subwoofas. I drive both old (1970 Capri) and new(ish) ('96 Ghia) cars and love jumping back in the Capri becuause it feels so 'mechanical' compared to the smoothness of the EFI Ghia. You feel the secondaries open, you feel the gears crunching in etc. People who say it is old "why waste your money on its old?" are ignorant, just ignore them mate. They have never had the pleasure and never will.

Most people i know all say the same shit. I put a cd player in my escort and my mums cousin goes "gees waste of money putting it in this BOMB" and one time the door wouldnt close due to the fact she wasnt closing it properly but still she goes far out this BOMB doenst close good. Even my mate scratched my escort and i go wtf are you doin and he tells me who cares its old. One time some guy hit it and offerd my 50 bucks and goes just send it to the tip i was about to get some petrol and torch his car.

You just have to live with it there is to many F$#K heads in this world.

I must agree with all of the above.
As a driver of a now nearly 10 year old ED XR6, i see it all to often, drivers of newerAU/BA xr's look down their nose's at you as if to say, "get your old piece of crap out of my way", alot of the people driving these are just in it for the Name, and so the can say "i drive an XR_ , S_, HSV_, etc.

The funny thingis if it wasnt for the successof the older models(i use the XR6 as my example) their particular model probably would nt even be around today.

I am not sying its all of the drivers of the newer cars.
I get heaps of looks/smiles/points, still about my car, and i have even had alot of drivers of newer XR's give me the thumbs up, which i think is a bit of a complement.
the same goes for other makes, i respect all cars, yes there is alot of crappy old and new cars out their and nothing pee's me off more than people that drive any car and dont look after it, the newer the car the worse it get.
how many of us have seen the brand new $180,000odd, BMW with the lazy driver who doesnt have enough respect for his car to clean the now Black-with-brake-dust, alloy rims.

Yes i know i may have gone a little off track, but it all comes under the same heading, RESPECT.

Thats my two cents

Yeh people should have more respect for AU's and VT's.

Seriously though, if someone can keep an older vehicle in decent condition and it is all they can afford (or want to spend) then why not treat it with the same respect as a brand new BA or VY (actually who respects VY's anyway)

Not really far off track there. Strange how the series 1 AU XR6 seems to have somehow fallen into the "Oh, its just a series 1" catagory lately!

I have to say that anyone who can keep the paint and panels on any car more than 5 years old in mint condition has my respect!

No offence but having a mint condition BA really isnt a big deal, it should be mint, it's brand new! But keeping a car mint well after the warrenty and resale value have passed its expirey date is a tough job that deserves all the :hy: and  in the world!

I suspect part of the lack of respect is the diminishing quality of products lately. Older (XW, beetles etc etc etc) cars were far more durable, and are still pretty solid after 30+ years. Newer cars however, seem to fall apart after 10 (or less). Prime example would be an excel ;) There's a general assumption now, if its older than a few years, it must be shagged.

It sucks though, I used to have a mk1 golf. Most ppl probably thought it was an old shitbox, but i treasured it - it was a fantastic little car . . . (mk2 1.8 donk, dellorto carbs, extractors, exhaust, 5 spd box, quads lights etc etc)
People just need to repect other people, and their property and choices . . .

Never had that when cruising in the mustang. But then I don't care what people think about what car I drive. I enjoy driving my cars, and I do so to impress myself only. I had a job where I had a choice of new cars to drive daily, and I got bored with them. I dont give a rats what people think about me or my cars. I don't care that 2 of my cars are older than me.

I don't bag what other people drive, as some are passionate about their cars like I am about mine. Unless they drive a holden ;)

If people look down on me because of my older car, that's their loss, not mine.

Any one person who thinks that an old vehicle does not deserve respect; especially those ones which have been looked after so well, and can run the quarter in 12 seconds is an intellectual midget!

You will find that a lot of Ricers fall under this category. Our engines aren't "High Tech" enough. We need more "VVVVV" in our "VVVTITITIVTIVVVTIVTIVTTTTVVVIVVTI".

love the times when the cars were a nice strong body, four wheels a nice diff, a gearbox and a big fat stonking rip snorting v8 engine.. maybe even a steering wheel.

those were the days. none of thise NVH crap. no body kits and T wings roaming the streets.

Yep I cop it all the time. Just because my xw hasn't got a flash paint job it must be unreliable!!.

You should've seen the looks on everyones faces when I announced to all my family and friends that I was driving to Albury (1200 odd kms there and back). They couldn't believe that I was soooo stupid. Yet you should've seen their faces when the windsor not only got to albury but roared home with only a slight hiccup (dirty fuel) which bothered it for about 20 seconds.

Although there is one good thing about having an old car.... I can park it aywhere and no one looks twice at it LOL.

The fastest exit from the old VFL/AFL Park in Waverley was always in my old XW Falcon 500 wagon. Those huge chrome bumpers created a VERY high level of respect from all other drivers including BMW's, Mercs, etc...it was amazing how polite they were in giving way to you and allowing you to merge in front of them. Mind you it wasn't a rust bucket and with bench seats front and back allowed six of us to fill the beast and I had the outer dimensions judged to the width of a bees pubic hair. I wasn't afraid in proving this to my fellow AFL fans in a hurry to get onto Wellington Road.

if someone says "it doesn't matter, it's an old car anyway" it generally means they can't think of anything else to say. So don't worry about it.

There will always be those few who feel as if they are of higher class than the ones who choose not to afford new cars. But I have also heard dickheads on the otherside who make smart remarks at the ones who drive new cars.

Conclusion... don't worry about it!)

I'll be the first to admit, it's only been recent that I have learnt a lot more about older cars. Hence, my respect towards these vehicles has increased. I'm not saying that I never used to have respect for older cars, but ever since I've become an absolute Ford Nut and learnt a shit-load more about cars, it's opened up a whole new world.

My family has never really been into cars that much, and when I have a screen saver with muscle cars I'm labelled a "bogan"! Go figure!! I never really grew up with someone breathing cars down my neck, so it wasn't until about 1999 that I had a best mate who was in love with old Fords to teach me a whole new world. "What's a shaker?" "A Cleveland, what's that?"!! That was what I was like then...

My girlfriend can't understand why I sit there drooling over an old 351 in a car from the 70s!

I think you will find that a lot of the people who hang shit on old cars (especially Ford classics like XAs, XWs, XYs etc) don't know sweet f()ck all about cars. It really irritates me how naive and stupid some people can be.

Let the little boys keep their 2001 four-banger Civics, I'd take an old Mustang, Mercury, Cobra, Caddy, Galaxie etc, or God forbid, even a decent Chevvy anyday!
