Ever since I took out the original 289 in my mustang and put in the 302 the transmission has been leaking transmission fluid really badly. I cant really tell where its coming from...it looks like its coming from above the oil pan on the transmission. I cant see how gasket would be leaking by just removing the engine...any ideas?

There is a important seal on the tranny where it bolts to the engine. This may have been damaged. One easy thing you may want to check out is the modulator. That is the thing that the vaccume line from your engine hooks into on the tranny. They are notorius for leaking and it is a very simple o-ring to change. I beleve this modulator is on the right side of the tranny. I will not swear to that though. It is round and has a vaccume line comming to it.

In that the leak started after the engine transplant, I'd suspect the front transmission seal. This seal is set in the transmission housing and rides on the torque converter shaft that goes into the front pump. It is a common and recommended practice to replace this seal anytime that you have the engine and transmission separated. Often the seal is disturbed in the engine replacement process and will leak after it is put into service. This is especially true is the seal is old or brittle. Unfortuneatly, the trans and engine have to be separated to replace the seal.

Oddly enough, I added some fluid to it so I would be able to drive it, and the leak has stopped..I do not understand.

Well... I have friends who's kids are always trying to put some junk car together from spare parts. Heck my friends are usually trying to do that themselves. If they were here they would probley say that your front seal got dried out during the engine swap and it just took a while for it to be softened up so that it would seat properly agin. Because we live in a rural area if it did cause problems agin we all try to help each other out, should the car brake down along the road. If you were planning on drivenig cross country I do not know if I would trust it. I am no mechanic just another car owner like you so you will have to decide on what to do next. Depending on your need for the car and what you do with it.

I have a 1992 Ford Tempo, I have noticed recently that there is a leak in the transmission. The leak seems to be coming from the far end of the transmission (towards the rear of vehicle). There seems to be a little flap (Yellow) where the leak is originating. Of course i know very little about transmissions, and have no idea what this is. I was just wondering if anyone knows if this problem can be fixed easily, or if I should just scrap that car?
