Falcons are said to run very rich. My mum owns an EL falcon 6cyl and lastnight i pulled all the plugs. By the colour of the tips, it looked like it was running lean if anything, however further down the plug where the little terminal joins the outer edge of the plug its black as. What does this mean? is it running rich? is it running lean? i dunno...
also...places like powerchip claim almost a 20kw increase by installing their chp with modifies spark timing and mixture (i believe they make it the exact correct ratio so not lean or rich). If this results in leaning out the mixture, wont this dramatically increase the running temperature of the engine? THey already get pretty hot if you push them hard , so how hot will they get if its running even leaner? Methinks a slight cooling upgrade would be in order for anyone considering this modification...
If anyone can enlighten me further about these mods i'd be very appreciative.

have a look here and try to match yours.
there are number of factors to consider aside the air/fuel ratio, such as operating temp, timing, bad spark, etc.
are they all the same, or do they vary at different cylinders?

all the plugs were pretty much the same and they look just like the "running rich" plug in the picture. What made me think it was lean was the very light colour you can see on the top electrode. From now on i'll be looking at the porcelain...
This doesn't change the fact that making it run leaner will cause it to run even hotter, especially if (when...) pushed.

You can't use those guides because unleaded has too many additives. The best you could possibly do is do a plug chop at the strip on a new set of plugs. Even then it won't be exact. You can only properly read plugs with racing leaded fuel, the lead produces a nice colour when the AFRs are perfect.

I think you'll find one contributor to the car running hot is the auto tranny, these ones produce a lot of heat.

I have an NC fairlane.

An example of fuel additives is when LPR came out, plugs all went orange on the porcelian. If you didn't know better you might have thought you had blown a head gasket.
