Mazda's 3+1 coupé concept

Photo's by Global Autoindex

Mazda has unveiled a new coupé concept car at the Detroit motor show. The Kabura is rear-wheel drive with a 2.0 litre engine, six speed gearbox and is based on MX-5 components, which is a good start. It is the first project completed under the guidance of Mazda's North American Operations Design Director Franz von Holzhausen, who talks of innovations that may be seen in future Mazdas.

The Kabura's 3+1 seating is probably one of those ideas that won't reach production, but it does make some sense. Research has shown Mazda that its buyers in the US, where it has the second youngest average buyer age of any manufacturer at 41, rarely carry more than two passengers.

So the driver's side of the Kabura has one door which gives access to the driver's seat and the rear jump seat whilst the passenger's side doors (yes, it's an asymmetrically-doored car) gives access to the two main passengers seats, both with reasonable amounts of legroom thanks to the lack of a glovebox.

The treatment of the front lights, the side windows and the rear may point to future look of Mazda sports cars, which are key products for the company.
